Like cooperation and helping, competition is age-old, and in normal animals, just as in normal human beings, competitive (or agonistic) behaviors can be brutal when the motivation is survival-related. Crowded animals and animals in stressed habitats will fight one another for resources, sometimes forcing the actual exile of other group members.
Goodness lies in sensing our bonds with others; evil happens when, for whatever reasons, those feelings are numbed. Just as we regulate ourselves as individuals against our more selfish impulses, we must learn to regulate humankind as a whole.
Isopraxism, or reflexive mirroring, means duplicating another’s body language, gestures, vocal tone, accent, word and metaphor choice, facial expression, and even breathing rate. It often occurs automatically between close friends, lovers, and people who are flirting. Usually unnoticed by either party, isopraxism tends to deepen a sense of trust and emotional closeness between two people in a healthy relationship.
Sociopaths do not commit crimes of passion, as desperate and emotionally overwhelmed people sometimes do. They do not hear voices commanding them to kill, like the rare and tragic individual whose violent acts are compelled by paranoid psychosis. Rather, they murder for convenience and also because, for them, killing is exciting and fun—killing as the ultimate form of domination and control over another living being.
Evil results from the absence of an ability to form normal emotional connections with others. And, in counterpoint—according to all the major religions of the world and many other ancient sources of wisdom, and also by the implications of modern evolutionary thought—goodness exists where this ability to connect is present. In short, goodness stems from the power to love.
