Life, like research, is unpredictable by nature, and every step you take will present choices you never could have anticipated. Good luck!

A PhD is not everything
So you have to commit, but there is one absolutely crucial caveat: the PhD is not everything. Even if you invest all your energy in the process, you must not invest your entire sense of self-worth in the outcome.
The key to creative problem-solving is to think beyond the first thing that comes to mind and to consider alternative options.
Difficult to do, difficult to describe
Writing is so difficult to describe because much of the process takes place subconsciously. For a skilful writer, it’s like trying to describe how you walk; at a superficial level you just put one foot in front of the other, but at a deeper level there are constant tiny adjustments to your balance and movement you aren’t even aware of.
Finding a gap in the literature
You can’t just read a stack of literature looking for a gap; you need to have a rough idea for a research project first, and then look at the literature to see what research has been done. Your initial idea may then change or evolve in response to the literature you find.
