The initial plan in the last weeks of Kafka's life, though, was to send him to Davos in the Swiss Alps. This was the world's most famous town for tuberculosis sufferers on account of its many sanatoria, about to be immortalised in Thomas Mann's novel The Magic Mountain, which came out just a few months after Kafka's death.
