Mark Haber's 2008 collection of stories, Deathbed Conversions, was translated into Spanish in 2017. He has served as a juror for the National Endowment for the Arts translation grant as well as the Best Translated Book Award. He lives in Houston, Texas, where he is a bookseller and the operations manager of Brazos Bookstore.

Schmidt and I were obsessed with the use of light. We were also obsessed with the use of dark. We were obsessed with shadows. We were obsessed with open space and, at the same time, teeming space. We were obsessed with ambiguity, irony, and the intricacy of devotion, though not a religious devotion but a devotion to art, especially art that detailed the apocalypse.
