James E. Lovelock
Lovelock's has named his hypothesis after Gaia, the Greek goddess of the earth. The Gaia hypothesis states that, in many ways, the earth is like a living system. Dr. Lovelock believes that not only does the environment of earth affect living things, but that living things also affect the earth's environment. He believes that living things help keep the earth's environment stable over time. The stability of the earth's environment, in turn, helps living things on earth survive. For example, scientists have long known that the sun's energy output has increased more than 30 percent during the last 3.5 billion years. Yet the average temperature on earth has changed very little, even during the ice ages. "Why didn’t the earth’s water freeze?" asks Lovelock. "Or why hasn’t it boiled away?"

Nuclear disaster Doctor Robert Gale
Dr. Gale does not know how many of the people who recived bone marrow transplants will live. But he knows that even if only one patient is helped, then this trip was worthwhile. Dr. Gale also hope that his work may begin a new spiral of cooperation between American and Soviet physicians. On a return visit to the Soviet Union in June 1986, Dr. Gale flew over Chernobyl in a helicopter. The reactor looked like an ordinary burned building, but the nearby town of Pripyat was empty. "I thought, this is it. This is what we've been afraid of all these years: a city devoid of all human life because of radiation. "Although the city was abandoned, many of the people from Pripyat have survived. And Dr. Gale continues to help these people through his talepte as a doctor and because of his compassion.
