A Buddha is someone who has attained enlightenment and has entered nirvana. A boddhisattva is, by definition originating in India, a being who though capable of attaining Buddhahood, has decided to remain in the Wheel of Life (that is, will be constantly reborn, and has the will and ability to act) in order to assist others to attain enlightenment and start the process toward Buddhahood themselves.
