Steven Brust, Macar göçmeni bir ailenin çocuğu olarak 23 Kasım 1955'de dünyaya gelmiştir. Asıl ismi Steven Karl Zoltan Brust'dır. Barmenlik, dondurma satıcılığı, bulaşıkçılık, aşçılık ve sistem programcılığı gibi işler yaptıktan sonra yazarlıkta karar kılmıştır. Cats Laughing, Boiled in Lead ve The Flash Girls gibi gruplarda gitar, banço ve davul çalmış olan Steven Brust'un A Rose for Iconoclastes adlı bir de solo albümü bulunmaktadır. Yazmadığı zamanlarda poker, eskrim, tiyatro oyunculuğu, atıcılık, shotokan karate, internet üzerinden oyun oynamak gibi uğraşlarla geçirmektedir. Minnesota Science Fiction Society'nin başkanlığını yapmaktadır.
Socialist Equality Party ve Workers League gibi Troçkist ABD partilerinin kurucu üyelerinden Jean Brust'ın oğludur. Bu nedenle Troçkist tavrı sergilemekten çekinmemektedir.
Amerikanın en sevilen fantezi edebiyatı eserlerinden olan Vlad Taltos serisi ile ünlenmiştir. Serinin kitaplarından biri olan Jhereg ile yeni bir kavramla karşımıza gelmiştir. Dragaera evreninde geçen The Phoenix Guards adlı serisiyle de başarısı devam etmektedir.
