Verne was happy to take Hetzel's advice. He put a little comedy into his plots, changed his endings to make them happier, and left out a lot of politics that offended previous editors.

People identify with Frankenstein's main theme. It is a warning to mankind not to "overreach," not to blindly use new technology without understanding the consequences. Like any good science fiction story, Frankenstein is about an idea: science can do great harm when used in the blind pursuit of power.
Scientific advances -steam power, for example- made industry and manufacturing much more important. Many people lost their jobs, or were trapped in nightmarish factories that treated workers more like animals than human beings.
