Junji Ito’nun Tomiesi beni gerçekten çok etkiledi. Hikâye rahatsız edici ama aynı zamanda aşırı sürükleyici; Tomie karakteri hem korkutucu hem de hipnotize edici. Psikolojik gerilimle beden korkusunu bu kadar akılda kalıcı bir şekilde birleştirmesi bence eseri özel yapan şey. Okuduktan sonra uzun süre akıldan çıkmıyor.

Yaşlı Adam ve Deniz, ilk başta oldukça sakin ve hatta yer yer sıkıcı ilerleyen bir kitap. Olayların yavaş gelişmesi okuru zorlayabiliyor. Ancak ilerledikçe hikâye derinleşiyor ve yaşlı adamın sabrı, yalnızlığı ve azmi daha anlamlı hale geliyor. Kitabın sonlarına doğru verilen mesajlar güçleniyor ve eser, emek, onur ve pes etmemek üzerine etkileyici bir anlatı sunuyor. Baştaki durağanlığa rağmen, sonu kitabı değerli kılıyor.
