As the Roman church had for centuries, Aquinas held that it is a true sacrifice, continuing that of Christ on the cross, and predisposing God to be gracious to those for whom it is offered. In the Supper the essence of the bread and wine are changed miraculously into the actual body and blood of Christ while the exterior remains unchanged, a doctrine known as transubstantiation—of which Thomas gave the classic presentation.
Unlike the classic anarchist thinkers, who as heirs of the Enlightenment looked to reason and science to bring about progress, the gurus of the counter-culture rejected the ‘rationality’ and ‘objectivity’ which had been so debased by the dominant culture in its attempts to justify war, poverty and injustice. The pendulum swung in the other direction, towards a reinvigorated spirituality, towards subjectivity, feelings, sensations, play, mysticism, and magic.

Of the classic anarchist thinkers, only Bakunin celebrated the poetry of destruction in his early work, and that because like many thinkers and artists he felt it was first necessary to destroy the old in order to create the new.
In an ingenious and now classic experiment by psychologist Michael Lewis to find out about the child's image of her own body, a child is given a mirror in which to view herself. After a while, the researcher moves the child away from the mirror and dabs rouge on her nose, without attracting her attention. The researcher then puts her back in front of the mirror to see what happens. It turns out that the child's reaction depends on her age. At one year, children watch themselves carefully, recognizing the strange color on their noses. At fifteen months, they touch the reflection of their own noses in the mirror and try to wipe off the rouge they see in the mirror. They recognize themselves and have an idea that something is different. By eighteen months, they try to wipe the rouge off their own noses. Now, it appears, they are capable of understanding that it is their own image being reflected in the mirror- an astonishing leap in self-awareness.
