A Room of One's Own is best understood when we first reflect on what feminism actually represents. Is it merely a demand for equality? Or a rebellion against centuries of imposed roles and limitations placed upon women? Even today, when we read about the historical denial of women’s most basic rights and freedoms, we are still surprised, perhaps because contemporary society presents such a different image of gender roles.
Let us imagine a world in which women were confined solely to domestic responsibilities: raising children, sewing, and managing the household, often forced into marriage and denied access to education. A world in which they had no private space, not even half an hour truly their own. In Woolf’s argument, the absence of such material and intellectual space explains why fewer women emerged as successful writers. Without a room of one’s own, she suggests, a woman is also deprived of an inner world that belongs to her alone. Nothing is truly hers; everything is defined through ownership by men. Even the impulse to resist such conditions is gradually suppressed.
Woolf’s writing carries a clear sense of intellectual rebellion. She questions why women could not live as freely as men, and imagines the creative potential that might have emerged under equal conditions. She also attempts to explain male claims of superiority through psychological and social patterns: insecurity masked as dominance, and the need to define oneself as superior to at least half of society in order to compensate for internal doubt. Without doubt it was one of most fascinating fantasy books I've read. The story was so captivating that I finished it in two days.
I started the book by a recommendation of one of my friends, and it was at the least as good as she said. There is nothing more to say, if you love fantasy—dystopian universes, treachery, schemes and completely unpredictable (Unpredictable when you are new to this type) plots, you should definitely read it.

I read this book almost to the end, but unfortunately it wasn’t my kind. The constant repetition of low self-esteem, self-doubt, and similar thoughts started to feel monotonous rather than deep for me. While I understand that this reflects the author’s real struggles, I personally couldn’t connect with the narrative. Because of that, I would give this book a lower rating. Still, hearing that the author passed away recently made me read it with more empathy and respect.

I read Empire of Flame and Thorns in English, so it felt only natural to share my thoughts in the same language. Writing this review in English just feels more honest and connected to the reading experience. ( Spoiler Alert!)
So ,fantasy has always been a genre that captures my interest especially when it includes an “enemies to lovers” dynamic. I can never pass up a story like that. Empire of Flame and Thorns caught my attention for that very reason. But as I turned the pages, I realized this book was not just about romance or the usual magic tropes it was much more than that.
The main character, Selena, doesn’t fit the typical “most powerful female lead” mold. She does have powers, but they’re limited. Especially in the earlier chapters, she sometimes fades into the background compared to the other characters. And that actually makes her feel more realistic and relatable. One thing that stood out to me from the beginning was that she never tried to use her power to manipulate others she just wants people to love her. That alone set her apart from many other “perfect” heroines. Selena feels more sincere, more human and that’s exactly why I found her so compelling.
Selena is forced to take part in a deadly competition filled with incredibly powerful opponents. At this point, the strongest Dragon Shifter, Darven, tries to stop her from joining the contest. At first, I thought he was doing it either because he was authoritarian or still holding a grudge over the drink incident. But as the story progressed, a different reason slowly became clear: Darven was afraid something terrible would happen to Selena. Jenna, sakatlanmadan önce geleceği parlak bir sporcuydu. Sakatlanmasıyla reçeteli ağrı kesicilere bağımlı hale gelir ve bir süre sonra uçurumdan atlayarak intihar eder.
Aslında intihar araştırılacak bir konu değildi. Ama Kelly öyle bir rahatsız oluyor ki araştırmaya başlıyor ve bir kaç yıl önce iki gencin daha intihar ettiğini öğreniyor. Jenna ve diğer iki gencin ortak bir noktası vardır. Hepsi de Derwent Akademesi'ne gitmiştir.

Hikâye karanlık ve kasvetli başlıyor. Jenna'nın intiharı ve onun psikolojisi ayrıntılı olarak anlatılmış. İntiharlar ve Faith'in kaybolması Kelly, gençlerin huzursuz edici dünyasına adım atıyor. Burada da devreye bu kitabın hikâyesinin sadece bir cinayet ya da intihar olmadığını arkadaş zorbalığını, istismarı, uyuşturucuyu, gençlerin sosyal medya hastalığını ve bununla birlikte başkalarına kendini beğendirme çabasını görüyoruz. İlk başlarda biraz durağan olsada sonrasında açılıyor. Özetle Uçurumun Kıyısında, heyecanlı, yürek burkan bir hikâye.
