Zora Neale Hurston was one of the most prominent figures during the Harlem Renaissance but her works became famous much later (in the 1970s) thanks to Alice Walker's efforts. Their Eyes Were Watching God follows the story of Janie Crawford who is in pursuit of love. Throughout her long journey, Janie eventually finds love but loses it. However, she becomes independent and discovers her true self-worth. The novel has many similarities to Hurston's own life, especially the character of Janie. Though I really liked the story and the characters, reading it was difficult. It was written in Southern (black) dialect and some parts of the story were very slow. That is pretty much my only criticism about the book. If you can get through it, you'll definitely enjoy it.
