Arda DENKEL - THE PROBLEM OF RECONCILIATION (1940) An Inquiry Into Meaning and Truth p. 15 (1948) Human Knowledge, Its Scope and Limits #125741262 #125741852 Russell’s point is that the sacrifice of the commonsense perceptual view will undermine the empirical character of science itself and compromise should be sought elsewhere. Now Russell’s search culminates in a Cartesian-type solution; he resolves the difficulty by distinguishing between perceptual and physical spaces (1948, p.224). I have already commented on such a way out, and I will not return to it. I would like to explore, though, the insight contained in the remark ‘their conclusion contradicted their premiss’ . What is wrong with science correcting, proving false, or simply downgrading perceptual claims into unreality, where these conflict with physical theory? Is this not what it is expected to do, after all?
