I wake up early, but I hang out in bed longer than usual. Since the surprise party yesterday, I’ve been bombarded with images of my past. And those memories have a bitter taste that yesterday’s cake can’t mask.
I didn’t recognize her. For the first time in her company, I felt alone.

JC is laughing. “Come on, V, you’re no rookie. You’ve got to know how a circuit breaker works.” Obviously. I also know what it looks like. But here, in the dark, in a second-rate ship I’m still getting lost in, things are a bit more complicated. I try to keep calm. I know that JC is just waiting for me to lose it.

He could just decide to kill me right now. I wouldn’t even see it coming. It would be over in just a few seconds, maybe a few minutes. I mean, nobody really knows this guy. He just finished his training. This is his first mission. What if he’s a member of a terrorist organization and joined this crew for the sole purpose of sabotaging the mission from within? What if he’s an impostor—an impostor among us?
