A lion in a den was a sort of plaything in former times, as a parrot or a pet lamb is now: this was in keeping with the fierce and warlike spirit of the age. You approach it upon the top of a broad embankment, which is as high as the depth of the den, so that the bottom of the den is level with the surface of the ground, which makes it always dry. Jacop Abbott (d. 14 Kasım 1803 - ö. 31 Ekim 1879) ABD'li çocuk kitapları yazarı. Abbott, Jacob ve Betsey Abbott çiftinin çocuğu olarak Hallowell, Maine'de doğdu. 1820 yılında Bowdoin Koleji'nden mezun oldu. Andover İlahiyat Fakültesi'nde 1821, 1822 ve 1824'te çalıştı. Amherst Koleji'nde 1824-1825 yıllarında okutman ve 1825'den 1829'a kadar doğa felsefesi ve matematik profesörü olarak görev yaptı. 1826'da Hampshire Derneği tarafından vaaz verme ruhsatı verildi. 1829 yılında Boston'da Mount Vernon Kız Okulu'nu kurdu ve 1829-1833 yıllarında buranın müdürlüğünü yaptı. 1834-1835 yıllarında Roxbury, Massachusetts'deki, aynı zamanda kurucusu olduğu Eliot Cemaat Kilisesi'nin (Eliot Congregational Church) papazlığını yaptı. 1843-1851 yıllarında kardeşleriyle beraber kurucularından biri olduğu Abbott Enstitü'nün (Abbott Institute) ve 1845-48 yıllarında New York City'deki Mount Vernon Erkek Okulu'nun müdürü olarak görev yaptı.
