This book hits really really hard. I've lived in Poland for about 6 months and I also visited Auschwitz. I admit I am not a very emotional person but man, visiting that place changes your perspective in life. It is also interesting that the story takes place in Sosnowiec which is where I lived in Poland.
The way the story is told is a bit complicated but very unique in my opinion. The story is obviously autobiographical. There are many motives, symbolism and important themes throughout the book. Jewish people are mice and the Nazis are cats. The story is very touching and the characters (they are real people) are very complex and relatable. The only thing that bothered me is the art style. I don't particularly enjoy black and white classic style art in graphic novels. However, since everything else is perfect, it does not really matter.
Maus is a great graphic novel about tragedy, despair, loss but also hope and optimism as well. Definitely recommended.
