I would kill any and all who stood between Casteel and me because we deserved to be together. We deserved a future, a chance to explore each other’s secrets. To love one another. We deserved to simply…live. I would do anything to ensure that.

“I love you, Penellaphe. You. Your fierce heart, your intelligence and strength. I love your endless capacity for kindness. I love your acceptance of me. Your understanding. I’m in love with you, and I will be in love with you when I take my last breath and then beyond in the Vale.” Casteel lowered his head, pressing his lips against mine. Something wet glanced off my cheek. “But I have no plans to enter the Vale anytime soon. And I will not lose you. Ever. I love you, Princess, and even if you hate me for what I’m about to do, I will spend the rest of our lives making up for it.”

His lips twisted into a half-smile. “Look at us, agreeing on who to kill and who not to.” I shook my head. “Which is a conversation I truly never expected to take part in.” “But you’re so good at it,” Casteel murmured. I snorted as I toyed with the stem of my glass. “Well, hopefully, it won’t come to that.” “I hope the same.”
“You will bow before your Queen.” Casteel eyed the Atlantian coolly. “Or you will bleed before her. It is your choice.”
Under me, I felt the ground begin to faintly tremble as my gaze swept over those in masks. The primal power of the gods invaded my every sense. My flesh sparked. Silvery-white embers erupted over my skin, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Casteel step back, and the wolven retreat. “Get ‘em, girl.” I smiled as wispy, crackling cords stretched out from me.

“It is a great honor that I introduce He who is born of the First Kingdom, created from the blood and ash of those who fell before him, the second son of the former King Valyn and Queen Eloana—Casteel Hawkthrone Da’Neer, the King of Blood and Ash.”

“I would’ve lost you again.” His chest rose sharply as the gold specks in his eyes burned brightly. “Because I did lose you, Poppy. I felt your heart stop. The imprint on my palm started to fade. I was losing you, and you are my everything.” I shuddered. “I’m sorry.”
“Can I share something with you?” Willa leaned in, touching my arm. A faint charge of energy danced over my skin. “You weren’t the only one seeking sanctuary that night. He was in need of shelter—one that could bear the weight of his desires, his love, and his pain. And he found it. He may have given you freedom, but you have given him more than you could ever know.” Emotion clogged my throat, stealing whatever words I had to speak. “Don’t forget that,” she said. “I won’t,” I managed.

"I will not let anyone take you or me, and based on what I can do, I’m confident I can ensure that.” “You were really hesitant about using your power not that long ago,” he reminded me. “You changed your mind?” “Yes!” And I had, without a doubt. “I would use everything in me to make sure that I and those I love aren’t taken again by the Ascended.”
“If you think that what I did was a shock, then you need to understand that I will do anything and everything for my wife.” Casteel’s gaze latched on to his father’s. “No risk is too great, nor is anything too sacred. Because she is my everything. There is nothing greater than her, and I do mean nothing.” My lips parted on a breathy inhale as I stared at Casteel. A messy, little ball of emotions climbed its way up my throat.

“You’ve awakened Nektas and still breathe. That can only mean one thing. My blood kneels before me.” Silence echoed around me as I lifted my head. There were several feet between the god and me, but his silver-eyed stare pierced straight through me. “It is I.” “That I know,” he answered. “I saw you in my sleep, kneeling beside the one you kneel behind now.” “It was when we married,” Casteel spoke, his head still bowed. “And I gave you two my blessing,” Nyktos added. “Yet, you dare to enter Iliseeum and wake me. What a way to show your gratitude. Should I kill all of you before I learn why, or do I even care enough to discover the reasons?”
He shot me a slow smile of warning. “She had this book—it’s her favorite. She even brought it with her when we left Masadonia.” “I did not,” I stated. “She’s embarrassed about it,” he went on, “because it’s a sex book. And not just any sex book. It’s full of all kinds of dirty and unimaginable—” I snapped forward, punching him in the stomach. “Fuck,” Casteel doubled over with a grunt as Naill let out a low whistle. “Gods.” I crossed my arms. “Happy now?” “Yeah,” he exhaled raggedly. “I will be once I can breathe again.”
“You are the foundation that helps me stand. You are my walls and my roof. My shelter. You are my home.” His lashes swept up, the amber of his eyes churning wildly. “As you are mine, Poppy.”

“Nothing you say can change that, but I know. I know in here.” I pressed my palm to my chest. “That I would do anything for you. I know you would do anything for me. You have, and nothing in this realm or any other will ever change that or how I feel about you. Nothing should ever make you forget that I laugh because of you.”
“You know, don’t you?” He searched my eyes with his. “What you mean to me? What I feel for you?” “Yes.” He wiped away another tear with his thumb. “I never knew it could feel like this. That I could feel this for someone. But I do—I love you.”
