Little Dragon
“Hello, my little dragon,” Menna whispered and calmly picked up the
baby. It weighed next to nothing, and its fuzzy brown hair spooled around
her head as she whimpered. “I know you’ve been through a lot for one so
new to this world.”
She unlatched her tunic and freed her breast, bringing it to the child. The
baby hesitated, knowing it was not her mother.
“Come now, if you don’t eat, then you can never be with your mother and
father,” Menna said. “I’m certain you wish to see them, no?”
The Princess blinked, as if she understood, as if her mind was that of an
adult who considered its options. Menna rubbed her little fisted hands and
tried again to press her thick nipple against the puckered mouth. With relief,
the baby parted her lips and suckled.
It was intense. Menna felt the child pulled the very life force from her.
She had to sit and cover the child with her skirts, as her thin skin was cool
to the touch. The baby ate and ate, drinking as if her belly had been empty
for many days. As she ate, she relaxed, and her small mind was no longer
turbulent.
She closed her eyes and sunk into Menna, as if the one she’d waited for
had at long last come. Menna hadn’t sought to love the child or feel
tenderness for it. She’d arrived for a mission, and she aimed to complete it.
But as she sat with the baby completely dependent on her, linked to her
from breast to mouth, she saw that, above all, what the child needed was
someone to love her during this time. Someone to keep her safe and to hold
her.
That’s why the gods chose her. She’d not been able to love her own child
and now she had one to care for. To protect from the madness beyond the
door.
“Your name is Princess Osaria,” Menna whispered, and the child’s lids
fluttered. “You’ve been stolen. Your mother is Queen Almira. Your
