a nameless monster
Once upon a time, there lived a nameless monster. The monster was dying to have a name. So he decided to set out on a journey to find his name. But the world was a large place. So the monster split into two on his journey. One went to the east. And the other went to the west. The monster who went east came to a village. "Mr. Black- smith, please give me your name." "You can't give someone a name." "If you give me your name, I'll jump into your stomach and make you strong in return." "Really? You'll make me stronger? Okay, you can have my name." And the monster jumped into the black- smith's stomach. The monster became Otto the black- smith. Otto was the strongest man in the town. memories fill my mind, as though they are my own, of not just events from Gideon's life, but of various flavors and textures: breast milk running easily down into my stomach, chicken cooked with butter and parsley, split peas and runner beans and butter beans, and oranges and peaches, strawberries freshly picked from the plant; hot, strong coffees each morning; pasta and walnuts and bread and brie; then something sweet: a pan cotta, with rose and saffron, and a white wine: tannin, soil, stone fruits, white blossom; and - oh my god - ramen, soba, udon, topped with nori and sesame seeds; miso with tofu and spring onions, fugu and tuna sashimi dipped in soy sauce, onigiri with a soured plum stuffed in the middle; and then something I don't know, something unfamiliar but at the same time deeply familiar, something I didn't realize I craved: crispy ground lamb, thick, broken noodles, chili oil, fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk, tamarind.. and then a bright green dessert - the sweet, floral flavor of pandan fills my mouth.

Yet without my permission, just before we crossed the threshold, I grabbed Raihn’s hand—squeezed it hard, hard, hard—and oh, Mother, I couldn’t let him go, I couldn’t do this. Our steps slowed. No one else would have noticed it, this split-second of hesitation. But for me, a million possibilities lived in that moment.
“I’ve lived through some injustices in the last couple of centuries. Seen some fucking travesties. But one of the biggest, Oraya, is that anyone taught you that you should become anything other than exactly what you are.” My hands went numb. My fingers were so tight around my mug that they trembled. The words split me from throat to navel, pulled me open and touched my most fragile parts. My mind emptied of thought for several long seconds. And then only one returned: I will need to kill this person, and I don’t know if I can.
