Aristotle (384 B.C.E.–322 B.C.E.)
Greek Philosopher Aristotle, a Greek philosopher and scientist, has had more influence on the field of science than anyone. His influence, which lasted more than 2,000 years, was due to the fact that he was the first to depart from the old Platonic school of thinking by reasoning that accurate observation, description, inductive reasoning, and interpretation was the way to understand the natural world. Since he was the first to use this method, he is often called the “Father of Natural History.”

allopatric speciation.
One of two methods of speciation (the other is sympatric), allopatric speciation happens when the ancestral population becomes segregated by a geographical barrier. The Karner blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samualis) became allopatric from its parent the Melissa blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa melissa) when the climate changed and restricted various populations along its range to northeastern pine barrens environments several thousand years ago. ... the Karner blue butterfly has a row of orange spots on the top of the hindwing, whereas, the ancestral parent, the Melissa blue butterfly, has orange spots on the top of both front and hindwing, a phenotypic variation.

coevolution.
the evolution of two species where the evolutionary changes in one of the species influences the evolution of the other. a classic example is the long, narrow bill of the hummingbird. it has coevolved with tubular flowers, and the adaptation of its bill allows it to feed on plants with long, tubular flowers. these flowers in turn have adapted (coevolved) for fertilization by the hummingbirds when they take their nectar.
