The first English plays told religious stories and were performed in or near the churches. Many events of religious history were suitable subjects for drama. There early plays, called Miracle or Mystery Plays, are in four main groups, according to the city where they were acted: Chester, Coventry, York and Wakefield.
The greatest Old English poem is Beowulf, which belongs to the seventh century. It is a story of about 3,000 lines, and it is the first English epic. The name of its author is unknown.
Some critics have said that Othello has no fatal weakness; but such unquestioning jealousy is great weakness, even if it comes from a mind too noble to doubt evil suggestions.
