Steven William Moffat, Doctor Who ve Sherlock dizilerinin yürütücü yapımcısı ve senaristi olarak bilinmektedir.
Moffat'ın ilk televizyon çalışması genç drama dizisi Press Gang olmuştur. İlk durum komedisi Joking Apart'ta çalışırken ilk evliliğinin bozulmasından esinlenmiştir. Daha sonra Coupling adlı durum komedisi yazmıştır. O sırada kendisi gibi yapımcı olan Sue Vertue ile tanışmıştır. İki ilişki merkezli yazdığı Chalk adlı dizi, İngilizce öğretmenini kendi deneyiminden esinlendiği okulda geçen bir durum komedisidir.
Ayrıca hayranı olduğu Doctor Who dizisiyle ilgili ilk çalışması 1999 yılında yazdığı The Curse of Fatal Death adlı parodi bölümüdür. 2005 yılında yeniden başlayan dizide, Russell T Davies'in başyazarlık döneminde altı bölüm ("The Empty Child", "The Doctor Dances", "The Girl in the Fireplace", "Blink", "Silence in the Library" ve "Forest of the Dead") yazmıştır. 2010 yılında onun yerine başyazar ve yürütücü yapımcı olmuştur. Aynı yıl, Mark Gatiss ile beraber Sherlock dizisini yapmıştır. Ocak 2016'da, Moffat'ın Doctor Who'dan 2017 baharında son kez yer alacağı ve onun yerine Broadchurch dizisini yapan Chris Chibnall'ın geçeceği açıklanmıştır. 2011 yılında Tenten'in Maceraları adlı filmde Steven Spielberg'in yardımcı yazarı olmuştur.
Doctor Who ve Sherlock gibi yapımlardaki başarısıyla bir Emmy Ödülü, beş BAFTA Ödülü ve dört Hugo Ödülü kazanmıştır.
