Chapter 16
There is a wisdom that is woe; but there is a woe that is madness. And there is a Catskill eagle in some souls that can alike dive down into the blackest gorges, and soar out of them again.

The first sentence suggests that suffering can sometimes lead to wisdom. But also points that not all suffering leads to wisdom. Some suffering can drive a person to madness, it can make a person feel lost and cause them to lose their way. The second part uses the metaphor of the Catskill eagle which l learned from internet (a powerful bird of prey that soars in the Catskill Mountains) to represent the strength of the human soul. The eagle is capable of diving into the deepest and darkest valleys (symbolizing moments of despair or hardship) but can rise again, flying out of dark places. It means some people have an inner strength that allows them to overcome the darkest times and emerge stronger.
