O zaman da, şimdi de İstanbul’daki arkadaşlarımızla kardeş gibiydik ve öyleyiz. İstanbul bizim vatanımız, orada doğduk. Bizim diğerlerinden farkımız bizim Hristiyan olmamızdı, yoksa bizler de Türk vatandaşıyız, bizler de vatani görevlerimizi yaptık, vergilerimizi ödüyorduk. Hatta biz Bizans’tan kalma Rumlarız. Yani çok eski İstanbullu. Türk insanı merhametlidir, derdini anlatabilirsin. Türkiye’nin hatası -pek siyasetten anlamasam da- bizi Yunanlılarla karıştırması oldu. Biz o topraklarda doğmuştuk, burasıyla hiçbir ilgimiz yoktu. Buraya geldik ‘Türk’ dediler, yani bir tokat da buradan yedik.

Governments around the world sent their best wishes and congratulated Amin for ousting Obote. Newspapers referred to the military takeover as a “bloodless coup.” Obote had gone into exile in Tanzania and managed to keep some African governments from supporting Amin. But Uganda’s two strongest allies, Great Britain and Israel, quickly recognized Amin’s new government and promised large amounts of military and economic aid.
At the same time, Amin faced other problems. The worldwide price of coffee plummeted, which shrank the profits from Uganda’s top export. Libya and other Muslim countries began to ask questions about the large donations they had made to Uganda. The payments were supposed to be used to build mosques and promote Islam, but the money had disappeared. At a meeting, Amin blamed his finance minister, Moses Ali, for the losses. Amin threw an ashtray at Ali’s head, and the minister drew a pistol on Amin. Other officials separated the two before there was bloodshed.
