I honestly don’t even know where to start. I wanted to read this book because the title and the concept caught my attention, but I can say it wasn’t exactly what I imagined. Did I like it? Did I enjoy reading it? Was I curious about what would happen next? Yes. In fact, since I had already read some of the books mentioned in the list, it was easy to understand the references. It was also written in good English — in my opinion, around a B1-B2 level — understandable for intermediate readers, with an interesting concept.
Unfortunately, since the characters were of Indian background, there were some words and expressions I didn’t fully understand. I wish there had been explanations for them somewhere. They also talked about foods a lot, but I didn’t even know what most of them were.
Then there was the thing Aidan did… I understand that sometimes not everything needs to be explained, but I still wanted more hints about it. I liked the idea of the story progressing through different books, but when we finally got to the books that gave the chapters their titles, I didn’t really like that the character was reading completely different books instead.
The ending wasn’t bad, but it could have been better. I really liked Mukesh’s storyline and the friendships he made, but I can’t say I connected much with the main character, Leila. If you come across this book, I think it’s worth giving it a chance.

Evet, hatta listedeki bazı kitapları bende okuduğum için anlatılanları anlamak kolaydı, zaten güzel bir İngilizce ile yazılmıştı, bana göre b1-b2 arası, orta seviyede anlaşılır ve konusu güzel

Puanım 5.5-6. Kitabın adı ilgimi çektiği için aldım. Ana karakter Jade sıkıcıydı. Yani çok salaktı, ilk defa tanıştığın bir adama bu kadar çabuk güvenemezsin. Isaac karakterinin temizlik takıntısı güzeldi ama background yoktu. Tüm hikayeyi en baştan beri hizmetçi Martha'dan dinleseydik çok daha akıcı olurdu. Zaten kitap Martha bölümleri başladıktan sonra ilgi çekici bir hal aldı. Bu kitaba 8 puan verenleri anlamıyorum.

Konu basit, işleyiş basit, olaylar başta çok hızlı gerçekleşiyor. Ana karakter Winter'dan kitaptaki herkes neden nefret ediyor bunun cevabı yok. Durduk yere 18 aylık zaman atlaması oluyor, gereksiz. Karakterlerin background hikayeleri zayıf. Ama Theo güzel, gülümseten bir karakter onu okumayı sevdim. Winter'ın sonlarda Theo'yu destekleyen tavırları çok iyiydi. Kitabın son bölümleri güzel olduğu için 6 verdim. Ama genel olarak beklentimin altında kaldı.

Sosyal platformda plottwisti hiç beklemiyordum yorumlarıyla beklentim yüksekti. Fakat kitabi bitirince hayal kırıklığınına uğradım. Yazarın direkt sona odaklandığını düşünüyorum. O kadar üzerinde durulabilecek konu varken çok alakasız bağlantısız olaylar veriyor. Mesela bari çocukluk bu kadar psikolojide etkili bir şey anakaraktere yansımasına değinilebilirdi, Alicienin konuşmaa sebebini çok kısa kestiler ve yeterli/ geçerli değildi ki olay zaten kızın niye konuşmadığıydı. Ya da şüpheli konumunda olsunlar diye bize birkaç detay verildi ama bunlar açığa kavuşmadı yani talya o restoranttan sonra niye korkuyor eşinden. Anakarakterin eşi hakkinda bir sey yapmamasi ve zaten atlatmış olduğu suçla hastaneye yok iyileştircem deyip gelmesi de absürt yani. (Tama kendisi hasta biliuorum da yine de kitapta kendisi dair bir sey olmayinca cok mal gibi gorunuyor) Hele kathynln gabrielle olan mesajlari karakterleri hic yansitmiyor mesajlar bi tik wattpad havasi verdi. Yani bence çok ilginc background olan karakterlee koymuş amabunları sona odaklanmaktan değerlendirememiş.
Selma ve Gölgesi is honestly one of the most interesting books Peyami Safa wrote under the name Server Bedi. At first it looks like a typical mystery or thriller, but once you get into it, you realize it’s not really about the events, it’s more about the characters’ inner worlds. Especially Selma. She’s both attractive and confusing, and you can never fully understand who she really is. That mystery is basically what creates the whole atmosphere of the book.
Safa doesn’t use Istanbul as a simple background either. The dark streets, ruined houses, dim lights… they all blend into the mood of the story. While reading, you always feel this light tension, like there’s fog in the air. Selma’s strange, unreadable attitude only makes that feeling stronger. She’s the kind of character that makes you stop and think, “What is going on with her?”
She might look like a typical femme fatale, but I don’t think Safa wrote her in a one-dimensional “dangerous woman” way. She actually feels like someone who is struggling with her own shadow, literally and metaphorically. Everything happening around her reflects how people can get pulled into their own darker sides. So the real suspense isn’t in the “mystery” parts of the plot; it’s inside the characters themselves.
The writing is smooth and easy to follow. Because it was originally published as a serial in the newspaper, every part leaves a little hook that keeps you reading. Still, it isn’t just a page-turner; there’s a bit of psychological depth, a bit of gothic vibe, and a bit of that specific melancholic tone Safa always has.
Overall, Selma and Her Shadow isn’t simply a “who did what” thriller. It feels more like a story about the unknown places inside people, the parts they fear, the parts they’re drawn to, and the parts they
