In superficial ways, people everywhere are already becoming one. As remarked elsewhere, with modernization comes common tastes: blue jeans, sneakers, T-shirts, soft drinks, hamburgers, rock music, Hollywood films. Does the sharing run deeper? In Iran, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and elsewhere, there are those who argue that they can undergo the scientific-technological-industrial revolution, as did the western world, without, on the other hand, being shaped by it, as was the west.

When the First World War broke out in 1914, cabinet ministers and general staffs expected it to be over in weeks. Instead it lasted for four terrible, seemingly endless years. The Bolshevik seizure of power in 1917, from which so much followed in our century, was an unforeseen and unforeseeable event.
