The epithelium of the vagina contains glycogen, which is broken down by enzymes and bacteria (most notably lactobacilli) into acids. This maintains the low vaginal pH, creating an environment inhospitable to pathogens. The glycogen concentration is controlled by oestrogen production;therefore any changes in oestrogen levels will result in either increased or decreased glycogen concentrations. If oestrogen levels decrease glycogen concentration also decreases, giving rise to an increased vaginal pH and making the vagina more susceptible to opportunistic infections such as Candida albicans; 95% of thrush cases are caused by C. albicans. The remaining cases are caused by C. glabrata although symptoms are indistinguishable.

Basic to the Baptist position was the belief that all direct connections between the state and institutionalized religion must be broken in order that America might become a truly Christian country. Backus, like Jefferson and Madison, believed that “truth is great and will prevail.” But unlike his “enlightened colleagues,” by truth he meant the revealed doctrines of Scripture.
The saints, with their particular assignments, may well have meant more to the people than Christ himself. St. Anthony took care of pigs; St. Gaul looked after hens; St. Apollonia, whose jaw had been broken in the persecution, cured toothache; St. Genevieve cured fever; and St. Blaise was responsible for sore throats. For almost every human need these tenuously converted Germans could find a saint.
