A Deconstruction of Existential Crisis

“Nausea” written by Jean-Paul Sartre is a work that delves deep into human psychology. It also discovers the nature of existence and the meaning of life. The novel was published in 1938 and became a seminal work for existentialist literature. Today, the book continues to captivate readers with its haunting atmosphere and philosophical prose. In my opinion, Nausea is not only a fascinating novel but also a self-examination on the nature of existence and the human condition. Also, it is a work that forces its reader to question their fundamental beliefs about reality and their place in it… To begin with, "Nausea" is a philosophical novel about a man named Roquentin, who finds himself feeling an overwhelming sense of existential despair. Roquentin is a lonely man who has traveled to Bouville to research the life of Marquis in the eighteenth century. After that, however, he is overcome by the strangeness of his surroundings. So he begins to experience a sense of nausea that he cannot explain. The novel is centered around the diaries of Roquentin. These diaries are the documents of his thoughts and feelings. I think, especially this journal technique is significant because Sartre's use of first-person narrative is highly effective in conveying the intensity of Roquentin's feelings of alienation and despair. The reader can see Roquentin is painfully aware of the emptiness of his existence, and his questioning of the very fabric of reality is a testament to Sartre's existentialist philosophy. Another significant technique used on "Nausea" is the way that Sartre uses Roquentin's experiences to explore the nature of existence. The work is filled with Sartre's deep philosophical reflections on the meaning of existence and the nature of time. It is more than just a

The plague, written by Albert Camus, the representative of existential philosophy; It was written in response to the French invading Algeria. The author, who has a humanist view; He identified the harm of humanity for the sake of purposes with a kind of plague epidemic. Although the rat deaths that started in the city did not attract anyone's attention at first, the increasing and ubiquitous dead rats worried people. Those who thought that precautions should be taken in this regard were right when people started to get sick. As the losses took place, everyone was in an atmosphere of panic. The protagonist of the book, Dr. After the death of Rieux's apartment worker, he realized how fast this epidemic spread and started to work with the awareness that if a solution is not found in a short time, it will turn into a disaster. Increasing deaths, quarantines, crowds in the hospital, and the tiredness of the doctors became unbearable. Although the priest of the cathedral, Paneloux, says that you pay the price of your sins to the people who fill the cathedral; Dr. Rieux knew from the beginning that this epidemic had nothing to do with divine justice, and wanted to prevent the epidemic, which turned into a crisis, from causing further harm to people. Dr. Rieux's last hope was the serum developed by Castel. Castel set to work on anti-epidemic serum trials. Meanwhile, deaths increased in the city, pits dug because the graves were insufficient, dead bodies poured with lime on them, corpses thrown into the water, patients fighting for treatment at the hospital, quarantine, and the curfew in the city continued. Throughout the years, human beings have developed new movements and ideas with the effects of wars, technological developments and mass changes. The beginning of modernism, which is the movement of the 20th century, is a period in which people question their place and purpose the most and that essential changes take place. Having become acquainted with colonization, capitalism, the theory of evolution, Einstein's theory of relativity and many other new concepts, mankind lost his purpose and faith with the effects of the Great War and atomic bomb. As a result of all this, man as an emotional being became a non-spiritual being. The rationality and aimlessness of modern man, especially western man, caused psychological problems and feeling lonely. Spiritual loneliness, alienation, feeling of emptiness and becoming indifference to surroundings are the basic problems of modern men. Although I am a person who believes in the power of knowledge, I can't ignore the spiritual positive effects of religions on people. On the other part of the world, people living in a way that depends on their traditions, live more moderately and conscientiously than England or other western countries. It is possible to say that the writers and poets of this period touched upon the existential crisis of modern men. In the A passage to India, besides the themes of racism and colonization, the themes of loneliness and spiritual collapse of the modern man are discussed. Marabar Caves is an excellent setting added to the novel by E. M. Forster to reflect these inner conflicts of man. Thinking as a reflection of human nature's incomprehensible sides, Caves' mysterious atmosphere makes them more complex to analyze. First of all, in the beginning of the novel, Mrs. Moore and Adela are planning to see

It seems that just surviving and sleeping with a full stomach are not the main problems of developed civilizations since the first formations of societies. ‘Surviving in a good condition’ is the key for modern women and men and death is mostly ignored or perceived as an end from a scientific point of view. Social status, economic level of individuals or some characteristics of modern era can provide people advantages or cause to have disadvantages in society. We can see some of these modern issues' reflections in 20th century art, literature and especially in drama. A Doll's House is one of the examples in which modern times' social issues are reflected. Henrik Ibsen, the playwright aimed to explain these problems to the audience through characters. Married couples, alone women and men are all struggling with money issues, loneliness and especially sexism in the play. Of course, these social issues are nothing compared to war, famine and natural disasters. However, these issues may appear as factors that deeply affect the mental health and psychological state of individuals that keep society alive. Since the Lydians, money has always been the determinant of social roles. In modern age, we experienced industrialization, technological developments and capitalism. Consequently, money started to control everything including women and men’s relationships. At the very beginning of the play, we see that how money determines men's dominant role. Torvald is the one who has financial power in the family. We can see the clear social difference between Nora and her husband by Torvald’s discourses; “What is this! Is my little squirrel out of temper? - (Taking out his purse.) Nora, what do you think I have got here?”(p.3) He can make Nora happy just by giving money. Also Torvald
