Strindberg believes that male and female are at constant war, not half so mortally in society as in the self. The self so divided is doomed to become neither male nor female, but a 'characterless character', devoid of the strenuous will which alone makes life a triumph. Yet that fragmentation of the personality, which spells the defeat of the forceful person, is the guarantee of his triumph as an artist.
