Everything the Protestant Reformation stood for was vigorously—one could almost say violently—rejected at Trent. The Protestant reformers emphasized justification by faith alone. The council insisted that Christian people must perform good works lest they become lazy and indifferent. Instead of the Protestant concept of external righteousness, by which God counts a person right in his eyes by faith, for Catholics, righteousness was internal, the process by which God imparts righteousness within Christians during the course of their life.
Western Christians are inclined to understand their fundamental relationship with God in legal terms. The primary problem is guilt from sin, a legal concept, and how a person’s guilt can be addressed to gain salvation. Roman Catholicism, in particular, elaborated this idea through its system of justification through confession, penance, and absolution. Later, Protestants and Catholics divided over the answers to this question, but not the question itself.

In order to bring about a free and just society, Tolstoy completely repudiated the use of physical force. He clearly understood that it is impossible to use violent means to bring about peaceful ends, to wield power to abolish power: ‘All revolutionary attempts only furnish new justification for the violence of Governments, and increase their power.’
Godwin rejects the idea that the justification for government can be found in some original social contract. Even if there had been a contract, it could not be binding on subsequent generations and in changed conditions. Equally, the idea of tacit consent would make any existing government however tyrannical legitimate. As for direct consent, it is no less absurd since it would mean that government can have no authority over any individual who withholds his or her approval.
Formal Model
"... is that each piece of information enters additively into the overall evaluation. This has the following justification. Suppose that information is about a state that is affecting rewards. A state is chosen by the experimenter, but is unknown to the subject. Information is provided, in every period, in the form of signals drawn independently in eery perod, from a distribution over signals that depends on the state."
