In Ward No. 6, Anton Chekhov constructs a quiet but devastating meditation on suffering, indifference, and the fragile boundary between sanity and madness. Set in a decaying provincial hospital, the story revolves around Dr. Andrey Yefimych Ragin, a man who has retreated into intellectual detachment as a way of coping with the bleakness of life. The hospital itself, neglected and almost forgotten, becomes more than a setting; it functions as a symbol of a broader social and moral decay, where suffering is not only present but systematically ignored. At the center of the narrative lies a philosophical tension that gradually unfolds through the doctor’s encounters with the patient Ivan Dmitrich Gromov. Ragin subscribes, at least superficially, to a version of Stoicism. Stoicism, originating in ancient Greek philosophy, teaches that individuals should cultivate inner peace by accepting what they cannot control and by remaining indifferent to external pain or pleasure. In its original form, it is a disciplined ethical system aimed at resilience and moral clarity. However, Ragin’s interpretation is hollowed out. What he practices is not active moral strength but passive withdrawal. He convinces himself that suffering is insignificant, that pain is merely a matter of perception, and therefore not worth resisting. This belief allows him to justify his inaction in the face of the hospital’s inhumane conditions. Gromov, by contrast, embodies a radically different philosophical stance, one that could be described as an existential sensitivity to injustice. He is deeply affected by the possibility of suffering, oppression, and arbitrariness in human life. His anxiety and paranoia are not presented merely as symptoms of illness but as exaggerated responses to real conditions of

The Unbearable Dirtiness of Being A “Fraud”

During the six days I read the book, I was exposed to so many fraud stories/news that I was amazed I have never read a novel where the protagonist defended himself from the perspective of a fraud. The first story I matched perfectly was Küçük Ağaç'ın Eğitimi, author Forrest Carter, real name Asa Earl Carter. I'm sure the partially autobiographical nature of the book, published in '76, affected sales. It would later be revealed that the author was a racist and had changed his name/life story simply to sell more, and opinions would change. When I first learned this, I wondered what he'd done, how he'd done it, and how he'd been exposed. What I was most curious about was why he wanted to hide himself. After a little research, it was clear that this decision stemmed from a combination of motivations. But giving an interview (using an accent) as if he were of Native American heritage was a sign that things had gotten out of hand. It's a shame there wasn't a real person behind such a huge success. The same goes for Juniper, the character of #k:390059. She was the supposed owner of a great success, always knowing she was wrong, and never content with it. The process progressed in a fluctuating manner, but even in her happiest moments, it gnawed at her from within. How can anyone endure this? She couldn't just say enough and let go, she sank deeper and deeper. It consumed her. While reading, I kept hoping she'd admit her mistakes and return to the right path, but frankly, she didn't; she didn't abandon her mistakes. Her ambition took over. For a while, I thought the author could have shared her character's deeper feelings, but someone who makes such decisions can't see deeper than they are. Because she's fighting to "justify" her own darkness, she can't shed light on her darker sides. Even

the fact that i didn't hate this makes me think. and i wrote a small essay on the queer story for personal reasons. here it is (spoilers ahead): There's a story in here about a gay man who commits a murder with his lover and the upbringing of this entire plotline is so interesting that I will try to break it down. Ahmet Ümit is not at all interested in describing his characters with many details. But when Başkomser Nevzat is introduced to this young man, Yusuf, he mentions his black mustache and burning hazel eyes; before describing him as "a man so beautiful that even the most innocent of women would be tempted by the sight of him." It feels already weird enough that his main character -a masculine, macho type cop guy who solves murder mysteries- describes an another man's beauty in such delicate details. Even Ali, Başkomser Nevzat's assistant who is also a macho guy that puts in extra effort to look tough (because he's young and still learning), also calls Yusuf "quite handsome" at some point. Now you might find yourself thinking, "Hm... There might be something queer going on in here." Because that's exactly what Ahmet Ümit wants you to think. But why? Why does this supposed to make you feel like this story is about to take a fishy, not-so-straight turn? When Ali brings up Yusuf's good-looking nature, it's for a reason. Unlike Başkomser Nevzat who had described him as a beautiful man at the beginning to state a fact; Ali isn't there to state facts, Ali is there to make a point. As they were interrogating the town-folk, Ali asks a man if there were any women who had tried to seduce Yusuf; because Yusuf's so handsome and all that. [Since this guy is incredibly hot, women must throw themselves at him—Ahmet Ümit's trying to say. (In these particular stories; we

I can't tell anymore if the book is really boring or if it's just me because it always has a high rating. I understand her intentions and reasons really well, but she was just annoying. How can you justify helping literally kidnap someone and then try to make yourself look innocent? There wasn't much of a romance either. I just liked Henry and Chanel's friendship, but overall it's boring.
