Chokshi'nin annesi Filipinli ve babası Hintli. Her ikisi de Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'ne göçmen olarak gelmiş. Anne babasının ana dili olan Tagalog ve Gujarati yerine İngilizce konuşarak büyüdü. Chokshi'nin romanlarında sıklıkla kullandığı Hindu mitolojisi üzerine olan ilgisi babasından gelir. İlk romanı Georgia Üniversitesi'nde hukuk fakültesine giderken çıktı ve sonrasında yazmaya devam etmek için okulu bıraktı.
