Octavia E. Butler, 22 Haziran 1947 yılında Pasadena, Kaliforniya, ABD'de dünyaya gelmiştir. Afrikalı-Amerikalı Bilim Kurgu Yazarı, Octavia E. Butler hem Hugo hem de Nebula ödüllerinin çoğuna sahip olmuştur.
1968 yılında Pasadena City College'yi bitirmiştir. 1995 yılında MacArthur Bursu alan iki bilim kurgu yazarı olmuştur. Octavia E. Butler, 24 Şubat 2006 yılında lake Forest Park, Washington, ABD'de hayatını kaybetmiştir.
