Efendimiz beni hoşgörsün ama, cennetten kovulması, lanete uğraması sayesinde insan zorunlu olarak, olabilecek dünyanın en iyisine girmiştir.
Eğer her şeyin olduğu gibi olması en iyisi ise, demek ki ne cennetten kovulma, ne de ceza vardır.
“I also know,” said Candide, “that we must cultivate our garden.” “You are right,” said Pangloss; for when man was put into the Garden of Eden, he was put there with the idea that he should work the land; and this proves that man was not born to be idle.” “Let’s work, then, without disputing,” says Martin. “It is the only way to make life bearable.”

Whose condition is most to be pitied, the Emperor Achmet‘s, the Emperor Ivan’s, King Charles Edward’s, or mine?” “I don’t know at all,” said Martin. “I would need to enter the heart of each man to know.” “Ah!” cried Candide, “were Pangloss here now, he would have known and satisfied me at once.” “I don’t know,” said Martin, “what scales your Pangloss would use to weigh the misfortunes of mankind, and set a value on their sufferings. All that I pretend to know of the matter is that there are millions of men on the earth whose conditions are a hundred times more pitiable than those of King Charles Edward, the Emperor Ivan, or Sultan Achmet.”
“True,” said Candide, “but still there must certainly be a pleasure in criticising everything, and in seeing faults where others think they see beauties.” “That is,” replied Martin, “there is a pleasure in having no pleasure.”
“And yet there is some good in the world,” replied Candide. “Maybe so,” said Martin; “but it has escaped my knowledge.”
“What!” says Cacambo, “you have no monks among you to dispute, to govern, to intrigue, and to burn people who are not of the same opinion as themselves?”
Indeed, the law of nature teaches us to kill our neighbour; and that’s why we find this practised all over the world; and if we do not indulge ourselves in eating human flesh, it is because we have much better food;
İnsanlar da doğayı biraz bozmuş olmalılar. Çünkü insanlar kurt doğmadıkları halde kurt olmuşlar. Tanrı onlara ne yirmi dörtlük top, ne de süngü verdi. Oysa onlar, birbirlerini yok etmek için süngüler, toplar yaptılar.
Yıkıntılar üzerinde
Candide çırpınan insanların yanında ve yıkıntılar üzerinde durmadan yürüdü. Böylece çantasında kumanyası, aklında Matmazel Cunégonde, savaş alanından dışarı çıktı.
Emeğinin karşılığını almadığın çalışma hayatı kölelik değilmidir?

Sonuç olarak, her şeyin sadece iyi olduğunu söylemek bir saçmalıktır, her şeyin olabilecek olanının en iyisi olduğunu söylemek lazım.
