Hakkında

The professionalization of anthropology through practical engagement is a major force underpinning the reformulations of the nature of the anthropological project. It is therefore imperative that anthropologists critically explore the conditions of their practices, to determine the difficulties and limitations to their ethical practice. These essays examine the application of expert knowledge in fields where there is the expectation of considerable cultural, social, and political consequence for human populations as a result of state, corporate, or non-governmental re-organization.

Rohan Bastin is an Australian born anthropologist who teaches at Deakin University. After completing his studies at the University of Adelaide, he went to Sri Lanka in mid-1984 for PhD research in the Tamil-speaking Eastern Province. In 1985, after the violent deaths of people in his research area due to the intensification of fighting between government forces and Tamil militants, Bastin shifted to the west coast and completed his research on Hindu temples and plural worship across ethnic lines. The results of that research were first a PhD at University College London and then a book The Domain of Constant Excess published in 2002. Bastin returned to Australia in 1990 and has held academic positions at the University of Melbourne and James Cook University. He became co-ordinator of the anthropology program at Deakin University in 2005. In 1994, Bastin conducted new research on relations between Buddhists and Christians within the majority Sinhalese community and through the late 1990s he studied the impact of the war on the urbanisation of Colombo and the deregulation of the Sri Lankan economy. In 2008, he conducted research at the famous Kataragama temples in the south-east of the country.
