Kim, 11 Kasım 1968'de Hwacheon'da doğdu. Babası ordudaydı. Çocukken, kömür gazından gaz zehirlenmesi geçirdi. Seul'deki Yonsei Üniversitesi'nde eğitim gördü, Yonsei Üniversitesi İşletme ve İşletme bölümlerinde lisans ve lisansüstü dereceler kazandı. Bunun yerine hikaye yazmaya odaklandı. Kim, 1993 yılında Yonsei Üniversitesi'nden mezun olduktan sonra, Suwon yakınlarındaki askeri polis 51. Piyade Bölümünde asistan dedektif olarak göreve başladı. Serbest meslek yazarı olarak kariyerine odaklandı.
Daha sonra Kore Ulusal Sanat Üniversitesi'nde Drama Okulu'nda profesör olarak çalıştı ve düzenli olarak kitap temalı bir radyo programına ev sahipliği yaptı. 2008 sonbaharında, sadece yazıya ayırmak için tüm görevlerinden istifa etti. Kim ayrıca İngiliz romanlarını ve en son F. Scott Fitzgerald'ın The Great Gatsby'yi Koreceye çevirir. Eylül 2010'dan Haziran 2011'e kadar Columbia Üniversitesi'nde misafir öğretim üyesi olarak bulunur.
