The loss of consciousness is a defence mechanism of the body showing that it is under an enormous pressure. Shutting down consciousness saves oxygen and energy and happens before actual damage to the brain occurs. Examples exist of people who have drowned and become unconscious for up to 30–40 minutes and have been revived with more or less no damage. Particularly, if the water is freezing cold, since it intensifies the diving reflex.

For instance, the dolphin that in social behavior, size and intelligence resembles humans does not possess the ability to shut its consciousness and breathing down during sleep because it would simply drown. The dolphin has solved this problem by letting half of the brain sleep at a time.

Not only does the diaphragm afford steady and even breathing, but it also has an enormous influence on blood and lymph circulation in the body, which has not been thoroughly investigated yet. In our everyday lives, the diaphragm functions in coughing, throwing up, or when we go to the bathroom. This is also where the cause for hiccups lies, which is a row of involuntary contractions of the muscles in the diaphragm. The most important function of the diaphragm, however, remains to be the ventilation of the lungs. Nonetheless, only a few use it optimally, and many are thus cheated of the physical benefits a correct usage can provide. But with only a few daily exercises you can become best friends with your diaphragm.

If you exhale very slowly, your body will accumulate carbon dioxide. This kind of breathing is termed hypoventilation (hypo meaning “under” or “less than normal” in Greek) and causes headaches and other unpleasantnesses, which naturally is undesirable. Conversely, if you exhale quickly or forcefully, the body will suddenly lose much carbon dioxide leading to dizziness and a prickly sensation in your fingers and lips. This state is termed hyperventilation (hyper meaning “above” or “too much”), and can be experienced by nervous or stressed individuals.

Ujjayi means “victorious breath” which refers to the breath conquering restlessness and stress. It is often called “the psychic breath”, because it has such an enormous impact on your mental condition. The word may also mean “warrior”, and in this connection it refers to an expanding chest of a strong and proud warrior. In a figurative sense, Victorious Breath can be understood as conquering your inner demons: laziness, bad habits, fear etc. Victorious Breath is a fundamental part of every advanced pranayama exercise, and in my opinion the most important of them all.
