Fish Soup or Trash?
“Yeryüzündeki tüm çorbaların iki sultanından biri ve balık aşçılığının zirvesi olarak bilinen Balık Çorbası, zor olan her şey gibi mükemmel olmalıydı. Bir balık çorbasının “şöyle böylesi, "idare eder"i, "fena değil"i olmazdı. İyi yapılanına ‘çorba’, kötü yapılanına ‘çöp’ denirdi, işte o kadar. Dünyanın en garip yemeklerinden biriydi bu. Ne kadar bol malzemeyle yapılırsa, o kadar makbul sayılırdı.”

The Culling Test
“Wow, demi-Fey? I’ve never seen one. What did they look like?” “Fucking weird, pardon my language. The man had pointy ears, obviously. Dark hair. Tattoos on his arms, eerie silver eyes like metal. Beautiful blonde woman with him. You know, I don’t mind the women demi-Fey quite as much. I’d give her one,” he says thoughtfully. “Pardon the expression.” I toss a horseshoe, and it clatters to the floor of his stall. A thought starts to blossom in my mind. “Did they have anything with them?” He shrugs. “I don’t know. Why do you ask?” I open my eyes wide. “Well, like you said, they’re dangerous. And you know the saying, if you see something, say something.” He holds up a finger. “Do you know what, love? The fella was carrying something. It was in a box, like a musical instrument or something. They never brought it out again.” His eyes widen. “Do you think they could be planning something? You don’t think it was a bomb, do you?” He scrubs a hand over his mouth. “With all these people here? Should I call the police?” I toss both horseshoes one after the other, so off the mark that one nearly hits one of the prize dolls. “It’s probably nothing. I doubt demi-Fey even know how to make a bomb. We don’t want the police shutting the whole fair down over an empty box.” What I know at this point is that Raphael and Vivian came in earlier and left a package here, then left. The Excalibur replica. “We will obviously need to reschedule the shadow trial.” Wrythe sighs. “Ms. Melisende can do it properly with the rest of the cadets.” “No,” Raphael says. Wrythe frowns at him. “Right. You think she should be expelled after all?” “She won’t do the shadow trial again. She’s shown her leadership by sending cadets to call for backup,” Raphael says. “She followed an enemy agent through the fair

Emotions
He arches an eyebrow. “With most people, you tell them what they want to hear. You’re not always quite so flattering with me.” “Well, Raphael, I worry that if your ego gets any bigger, it will need its own magical realm.” He leans closer to me. “But why is it, exactly, that I am the only one to whom you show your real self?” My heart is beating faster. “Because there’s no point pretending with you, is there? I heard what you thought of me. Trash was the word that got me, actually. You referred to my mother and me as trash. Yes, this was a long time ago, and no, I’m not over it. I overheard everything. And I don’t blame you, not after one of my mother’s spectacles, but I don’t see why I had to be included.” After all this time, I can’t quite believe I’m letting it all out. He sits back. “I never said that. I wouldn’t have.” My chest tightens. “But I remember it. Right after mother got drunk again. She was falling down the stairs, and you had to help carry her back to our room. You had already stopped speaking to me…” I’m dangerously close to mentioning our kiss, and I really don’t want to betray how much I’d thought about that single kiss over the past ten years, and we already know I’m terrible at lying. “Anyway, you’d stopped speaking to me. But Mom was drunk, and you and your rich friend helped carry her to our room at the château. And the next day, I overheard you talking to your posh friend about how we were trash.” “I wouldn’t have said that.” Anger flickers through me. “Not in English, but in French. ‘Des ordures.’ One of you said, ‘People like us don’t spend time with people like that,’ and the other one said, ‘Yes, isn’t she trash? She and her mother.’” He nods, frowning. “Ah, guilty as charged, in part. I did say, ‘People like us don’t spend time around people

Hypotermia
“Nia, it’s now or never,” Freya says. I turn to glance at the incoming riders. They’re so frighteningly close, just a few yards away. The leader’s eyes bore straight into me, a malicious golden gaze. With a snarl, he raises an enormous axe above his head, screaming a battle cry. My fear nearly paralyzes me, but I use it instead to drown out my other thoughts. I hurl it at the veil, unfocused, directionless. The entire veil flickers, its buzz dying. Raphael grips my arm and pulls me across. I stumble, racing for a few steps through narrow fields crisscrossed by stone walls. An oak forest spreads across the landscape. Coppery light kisses the tree leaves. My body feels frozen, shivering. Icy air stings my skin, and my teeth chatter. It looks like spring, but it feels like the dead of January. The hum rises in my ears, and I can see the riders through the haze of the veil. They rear their horses to a halt on the other side, and one of them raises his bow. Fuck. We might be through the magical barrier, but it won’t stop arrows. Something whizzes past me, but it’s coming from behind. Freya’s arrow finds a soldier’s throat on the other side. “Keep going!” Raphael shouts. He and Freya are off again. I follow after them, but my muscles feel frozen. I’m shivering violently, my body bitten by the cold. The glacial air pierces my body down to my marrow. “Nia, let’s go!” Raphael shouts. My muscles are ice. An arrow from beyond the veil zooms by, inches from my face. “Go!” I shout through clattering teeth. Raphael rushes back and scoops me up, pressing me against his firm chest. Enfolding me in his arms, he starts to run. Up ahead, Freya is

Wardrobe
“I thought we were going to the wardrobe person,” I whisper. Raphael’s muscles look tense, his expression glacial. “I’m one of the few people here who has lived in the Fey realm. I know how they dress.” Serana looks at me strangely. “Yes. It’s a very important job. Mr. Launcelot will get you set up.” She leaves me alone with Raphael, and I survey the room again. His chamber windows overlook the entire city of Camelot to the north. From here, I can see a bridge beneath the tower connecting two buildings, as well as the monumental walls that enclose three sides of the city. “Nice place you have here.” I turn back to him. “It’s not the sort of room trash would live in, is it?” One black eyebrow raises. “Listen, pixie. I understand you think very highly of yourself, but we’re not in the vineyards anymore, you know. You’re at Avalon Tower, and I’m a knight of the Round Table.” My eyebrows shoot up. “Is that really a thing?” “Yes, that’s a thing. Don’t get too comfortable here. We’re going down one floor so you can try things on. I don’t know if we have anything for someone so ridiculously short, but I’ll see what I can find.”
