From this point of view, tragedy stages moments of crisis in a community’s understanding of itself, moments when it risks being torn apart by conflicting beliefs about the gods, political authority, relations between the generations and the sexes, between natives and immigrants. These beliefs invariably have a temporal aspect to them. ‘Thou metst with things dying, I with things new-born’, says the Shepherd to the Clown in The Winter’s Tale , at the point when the play turns from tragedy towards penance, reparation, healing and re-birth, from winter to spring. But what of the dying things that live malignantly on, blocking the way to the future?

‘The least touch of any theology which has a compensating heaven to offer the tragic hero is fatal.’
