He had no sense-organs, he could neither hear nor see, he could only scream. And he operated always in darkness. As the sun-god's boat sailed through the underworld he tried again and again to block its passage by drinking up the imagined river on which it sailed. In every access of darkness — in an eclipse, in the waning of the moon, in a cloudy sky, but above all in those critical moments, the onset and the end of night — Apophis was at work.
By associating fire with the all-embracing principle of order itself the prophet gave it a still profounder meaning, as the life-force within all the ‘creations’. He laid it down that his followers should pray in the presence of fire, fixing their eyes upon it and thinking the while of asha , of justice and truth.
And to this day Zoroastrians pray in the presence of fire — whether it be a family praying before a hearth fire, or priests praying before a ritual fire, or any individual before the great natural fires of the sun and moon.
The name Zarathustra probably meant either ‘he who can manage camels’ or ‘he who has active camels’.
