An Agreement
“If I agree to this, against my counselor’s caution, we must come to a mutual agreement,” he said. She eyed him warily. “What agreement?” He moved closer so that she could smell the musk of his skin and their knees brushed against one another. She almost pulled away, but he’d offered an agreement and she was willing to listen. “If you want true responsibility then you will join me each night for dinner.” His voice was softer. She studied him. “Dinner?” “Aye, dinner.” “That’s all?” She raised a brow. “You will sit in each small council and war meeting. You will listen to the endless litany of complaints. You will be there at each jury and execution. All the nastiness of ruling you will also do because if you want to be a queen then you will also see how awful it is to be a queen.” Relief and victory flooded her and she attempted to keep her face neutral at his offer. It was more than she could hope for but then she realized he hated it. He hated ruling, hated the bureaucracy that came with being a king. He preferred battle; he’d said so himself. He would willingly hand her the kingdom if it meant he did not have to do these tasks. “Each small council?” she asked. He nodded. “Each war meeting?” He nodded. “Jury and execution?”
