The selling point of scepticism, according to Sextus Empiricus, is that it leads us “first into a state of suspense (epoche) and at last into ataraxia” which literally means a mind free of trouble.
Frederick Copleston sees Montaigne as a bit of a dabbler, someone who indeed “revived the ancient arguments for scepticism” but who did so in the manner of a “cultivated man of letters,” adding to his scepticism a dash of “the moral ideal of Socrates” and “the Stoic ideals of tranquility and of obedience to nature.”
