Just... Wow.
"Why?! Are you?! A regenerative blessed?! Idiot! Why?! X-men! Is a great example! Of variation! Mix it up a little! Expand your repertoire!" (Keeps stabbing) Fujimoto really has a thing for cinematography, doesn't he? First Goodbye Eri which is all about an immortal having her life be a film, then cinematographic panel shots in Chainsaw Man, and now this masterpiece... I was not so sure where this was going with Togata, but she's my fav deranged chaotic character now. She just wants to direct her film. Let her cook!

"I formed a fist"
The amount of shock value this one volume had on me is appalling and I'm saying this as someone who have read and is still reading Fujimoto's other gruesome work Chainsaw Man. However, the entire Chainsaw Man is a child's play compared to one volume of Fire Punch. There is gore, shocking "intimacy", things I don't wanna spoil for you and a character so manipulative that they succeed what took Makima from Chainsaw Man an entire part 1 within 4 panels. And somehow it is not fast paced. I'm really confused overall, this is really good.

"And yet… AM has won, simply… he has taken his revenge… I have no mouth. And I must scream." Even though this book probably includes more stories, I only read the I Have No Mouth story from a pdf and this is the only book that comes up when I search the story, so I will be only writing about this story and not the actual book. I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream is probably hands down the best sci-fi short story I've ever read along with "Answer" by Fredric Brown. It is very graphic, violent, raw and disgusting. Even though it makes me question the sanity of the writer as I read the graphic depictions of AM's torture of humans - or what's left of them - I cannot help but be amazed at how great the story is at making me feel such an inexplicable horror beyond imagination. It is very hard to make someone feel such an existential horror, especially through the medium of writing. And yet this story thoroughly encapsulates the feeling of utter despair in a time and world unimaginable to us for creatures that no longer can be called human. And despite all it has done, probably for the way he "feels" an immense hatred, the machine AM is merely a shadow of the worst parts of humanity despite surpassing its creators in the ways it can create wonders. The machine is more man than any of the humans left in the story for the way it seeks a meaningless revenge and plays with humans the way humans play with ants. Sadistic at best like a child-god.

"I don't really understand 'Les Fleur Du Mal'.. I was just... intoxicated by the act of reading it!" This hits home really hard. Even though the way of telling the story through middle schoolers is not something I like a lot, the themes and message is very relateable. Although, perhaps middle-schoolers is not a bad choice. I can see how someone just hitting puberty fits the required characterization. By the way, "Saeki-san, I've always had this one-sided love for her... She was my muse, ans I worshipped her like an angel... I wanted her to remain as an angel forever... I didn't want to face the actual person..." this line, this confession to his self is my favorite thing so far. It made me remember an old film named "Time to Love" (Sevmek Zamanı) by Metin Erksan and also a song by Massive Attack called "Spoils" which both deal with the same thing: The act of loving someone or something you idealised and idolized in your mind rather than the actual thing or person. I feel like Aku no Hana could be the Japanese equivalent of these, but I have a feeling it will diverse in the next volumes and not focus on that aspect, which would be a shame because it lays down the perfect frame for a story like that if it just continues on this path. But my guess is it'll focus more on the flowers of evil and inner darkness and emotions rather than that. Nevertheless, I like this manga.

The thrill of doing something prohibited
"I'm disappointed. In the end it turns out you're just like everyone else. Their vomit-like chatter and laughter hardening together like shit. Who has a crush on who... Who doesn't like who... All scum that would be better off dead! Just spewing out pretty words. Inside... all of you! Sex, sex! In the end, fucking sex is all you want!" I really don't like Nakamura, but she is the only person who gets the flowers of evil that is blossoming in both Kasuga and her. The rotten and dark side of all humans is something we have to face at one point. And in reality, some people actually do face this part very early because of dark events in their lives. From what I get, Nakamura is someone who had to face this part because of bad events that happened to her whereas Kasuga deliberately delves into this darker world and his darker self and exploring it through the French poet's work, and now partially with Nakamura forcing him. I had watched the anime before, and as far as I know it's unfinished because it didn't get a second season in animation. But I remember this very iconic episode. It's bland in manga but the animated version of the classroom scene in the anime is so cathartic that I go back to watch it from time to time. This manga does a very good job making me feel rebellious against this wretched and stupid world at one moment and then making me feel embarrassed for feeling so by toning down those moments and turning them into shameful moments. It's a roller coaster.

The Chainsaw Man Church is completely extra in my opinion. I really like Asa Mitaka / Yoru and Famine. I feel like a lot's happening at the same time. I love the slow parts with Asa, they are very interesting and remind me of part 1. I also want to see more of Famine. I get the Church act and how they are trying to revoke a fear of Chainsaw Man worldwide to make him stronger as a devil once again by using people's fears, but it somehow feels too rushed and too chaotic. Part 1 was also chaotic at times and sometimes hard to understand like the Darkness Devil arc, but it would always come back to where it was intended to go and I was never lost. Part 2, especially with the prophecy and church arc, is making me feel lost and sometimes uninterested in the story overall a lot. I simply keep finding myself yearning for more panels with the characters I loved coming back and new characters I love. However, it's Fujimoto and I really want to trust him. I hope he somehow ties all this back together in a meaningful way. Btw, Chu Chu Lovely Muni Muni Mura Mura??? God, that was amazing! I can't wait to see that chapter animated! It is definitely written and drawn to be a storyboard for a film. It is such a cinematic chapter; the beginning, the chorus, the guys lining up, the hallway and fight scene... it's all made to be a film and not a manga. This is why I love Fujimoto, his panels are unlike regular mangas but they feel like I'm watching films. Truly unique. Also, RAWR. SHE IS BACK, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! SHE IS BACK!

The Wisdom of Odin
The book is about the words of Odin himself; the chief god, god of gods in Norse mythology. Surprisingly, the poem which consists of more small poems, stanzas and sections, is very relateable even today. It gives us insight about life and advices us about how to live our lives. Hávamál reminds us to be friends to those who are friends to us, and enemies to those who secretly seek our fall. It reminds to live a bold and brave life while remaining quiet and watchful, not bragging about anything and becoming a prey to our pride like Odin to Fenrir on the day of Ragnarok. The poem advices us to live a life of dignity and wisdom. It reminds us to experience everything in the world, but not overindulge in any of them. It suggests us to have fun and drink, but not get drunk; to fall in love but not become blindly attached and forget yourself; to befriend people, but never put yourself down for others; to experienve everything in moderation and live your life to the fullest. The translator Jackson Crawford is a master in this field. This translation is definitely much better than others and if you've read this, I suggest you read his translation of The Saga of The Volsungs. Overall, there is much wisdom and good advice to be taken from this thousand-year-old poem. Definitely give it a read.

A poem about legacies and death
In the poem, the statue of Ozymandias, the king of kings, lies decaying in a distant desert. Only the pedestal, two upright legs and a face, remains of his statue; the rest is shattered and buried under lone and level sands. Netiher his mighty power as a king nor his statue, his legacy, could withstand the passage of merciless time. This poem reminds me of the 76-77th stanzas of Hávámál, a collection of Old Norse poems about philosophy of life. However, these stanzas and Ozymandias are more like two sides of the same coin, they complete each other. They both give the message of "memento mori" (remember you are a mortal), and speak about leaving a legacy. Ozymandias does this by the statue of Ozymandias, the king of kings while 76-77th stanzas of Hávámál give this message through the experiences of common man; however, this time the speaker is Odin - the king of gods. The message, along with memento mori, is that immortality is only achieved through a legacy: through the tales of the one who lived and died; through the reputation they leave behind. Man is the legacy he leaves behind. Nothing more, nothing less. Although Hávámál presents legacies as more heroic, personally, I always thought about legacies similar to that of Ozymandias. Even the legacy, the statue, of King Ozymandias lies broken into pieces in a distant desert; forgotten and covered with sand. No matter how mighty and powerful you are, no matter what your title is, no matter how powerful your legacy is, time and death will erase everything. In the end, good or bad, nothing matters. Everything is doomed to be swallowed by the sands of time.
