Maggie O’Farrell’ın tarzını sevenler için çok uygun bir roman. Ben yazarın anlatımını çok sürükleyici bulduğum için kitabı elime aldığım gün bitirdim. Tek sıkıntım yazarın her kitabında aynı formülü tekrarlıyor olması: birbirini tanımayan iki aşığın hikayeleri bağımsız olarak başlayıp kitabın ortalarına doğru kesişir, baştan beri ipuçları verilen bir gizemli olay son 70 sayfada açıklanır, kitabın anlatımı da hem zaman içerisinde ileri geri, hem de üç jenerasyon karakterler arasında zıplayan birkaç paragraflık parçalardan oluşur. Buna rağmen karakterlerin hepsi önceki romanlara göre farklıydı ve bütün karakterler oldukça derinlikliydi.

There is actually nothing to say about the book, as it doesn’t have any engaging passages or a real plot. We are reading paragraphs about two friends who don’t have any emotional connection with each other but who are only attracted to one another sexually. I mean, normal people have feelings, daily routines, and sometimes interesting dialogues, but these two have absolutely nothing in common, neither daily routines nor any interesting actions happening in their lives. I chose this book because of its simplicity; it was a good choice for my language level, but there was nothing interesting or appealing in terms of the story or the characters. It’s good to see new writers doing interesting things, and even if I’m a bit distant from the bestseller shelves or new writers, I’d like to give this book a chance and maybe break my prejudices. Unfortunately, I didn’t like the book and saw it as a waste of time. Saying that makes me a bit sad because Sally Rooney seems to be a courageous person who raises social awareness about what is happening around the world. I’ll still keep my distance from her books, but I hope that won’t last forever.

The Hour of the Star is not a novel. It is an autopsy. Not of a life, but of a condition. Nothing “happens” because nothing is allowed to happen. Lispector dissects a form of existence that never rises to the level of experience. Poverty here is not dramatic, loneliness not lyrical. They are simply the baseline. Feeling itself is rationed. The scream in this book is not rebellion. “Because there’s the right to scream. So I scream.” This is not a claim to freedom; it is a biological reflex. Proof of respiration, not resistance. A sound made to confirm that the body has not yet stopped functioning. No one is meant to hear it. No one is expected to respond. Existence is not illogical because it is complex, but because it is arbitrary. Life is not organized around meaning, justice, or growth. Those are postures available only from a safe distance. Inside The Hour of the Star, life is reduced to maintenance. One continues not out of hope, but out of inertia. Endurance replaces desire. What Lispector annihilates most effectively is the idea that suffering is universal. It is not. Even suffering has an entry fee. Sadness requires leisure. Grief requires space. Reflection requires a margin of safety. Here, there is no margin. Life must be executed, daily, efficiently. The subject performs “being” the way one performs labor. The self is not fractured — it is undeveloped. The character does not mourn her lost identity because there was never an identity to lose. The absence inside her is not a wound; it is a vacancy. Awareness arrives late, and it arrives useless. Recognition does not repair damage. It only confirms it. “So young and already rusted.” This is not metaphorical. Corrosion precedes time. A debut novel about an accomplished woman who slowly loses her thoughts and memories to early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Genova's work with Alzheimer's patients has given her a deep understanding of the disorder and its impact not only on the afflicted, but on their friends and family as well. She does a remarkable job of sharing that perspective with her readers. Most of us have a sketchy familiarity with Alzheimer's and its primary symptom: a gradual loss of memory. Genova moves her readers beyond their superficial knowledge to a more profound grasp of the illness, illuminating consequences of it that most haven't considered (for example, the eventual loss of the ability to read a novel, as Alzheimer's patients lose the capacity to keep track of a plot line). The novel follows Alice Howland's life from her first suspicions of the illness through its conclusive diagnoses to how Alice and her family learn to cope as her condition worsens. Although the story's progression is somewhat predictable, the scenes Genova relates are generally unexpected. Like Alice, the reader never knows when the disease will impact a situation or simply lie dormant in the background. When Alice does exhibit symptoms, they seem to come when she, and the reader, least expect them. Genova also explores the difficult decisions faced by Alzheimer's patients and their families. She delves into such subjects as treatment options, care facilities, coping mechanisms, genetic implications, and even suicide. The text occasionally gets a bit wordy and artificial during some of these discussions, but for the most part they add to the sense of realism the novel projects.
