Léon l’Africain is one of those rare historical novels that feels both intimate and epic at the same time. Written as a fictional memoir, the book tells the story of Hasan al-Wazzan, a real historical figure who later became known in Europe as Leo Africanus. He was born in Granada at the time of its fall, traveled across North Africa and the Middle East, was captured by pirates, and eventually lived in Rome. His life alone sounds like fiction but it isn’t. That’s part of what makes this novel so powerful: it’s based on a real person who truly moved between civilizations during a time of huge political and religious change. Through his eyes, we witness the fall of Muslim Spain, the cultural richness of Fez, the tensions within the Islamic world, and the Renaissance atmosphere of Rome. Instead of presenting history as a dry list of dates and events, Maalouf lets us experience it through emotions, relationships, and personal dilemmas. The novel explores themes of identity, exile, belonging, and cultural hybridity. Hasan doesn’t fully belong anywhere, not in Granada after its fall, not entirely in Fez, and not even in Rome where he adapts to survive. His shifting identity raises questions that still feel relevant today: Are we defined by religion? By nationality? By language? Or are we something more fluid? What I really appreciate about this book is how smoothly history is blended into the narrative. You learn about political struggles, trade routes, religious conflicts, and intellectual life almost without noticing that you’re “studying.” If someone doesn’t enjoy reading history books, this novel is a perfect alternative. It teaches history through story. The facts are there, but they’re alive attached to characters you care about. Maalouf’s writing style is

i lost my trust to the book blogger whose recommend this book. and the writer who write the introduction … after i read the introduction i was expecting some impressive facts about the way we (as a woman) embrace the things that the patriarchy enforce us. like i was waiting to say “i didn’t think about it in that way.”. that isolated girl whose (i think) supposed to make the 39 women and the reader question about the things which seems normal to them but does no such thing. rather than questioning she ALWAYS says “iM diFeRrent FroM yOu”. nothing makes the character reasonable in the story. what was the point of writing an isolated girl in a dozens of women if you just write a lonely woman story? additionally, the author training to be a doctor and drop it. then explaining the medical things which refer to this knowledge, i guess and while writing the women genitals she proudly says the word “hymen” but she completely wrong by the knowing the meaning and the function of it. if i wanted to read a woman whose escaped from a bunker and trying to find back home, i would select the book. it is not a feminist book, not a well written book. keeping on the toes? no. keeping the hope? maybe. just a plain book who does not deserve so much hype.

Dictatorship and Decline Many historians and citizens criticize Abdulhamid II’s reign for: Authoritarianism: The 1878 suspension of the constitution and parliament, ruling via censorship and spies Heavy surveillance and suppression of dissent (especially against reformists) Massive territorial losses, such as: Cyprus (to Britain, 1878) Tunisia (to France, 1881) Egypt (to Britain, 1882) Kars, Ardahan, Batumi (to Russia, 1878) Later, under his weakening rule, increasing control lost in the Balkans Blocking of internal reform movements, such as those led by the Young Turks So, it’s valid to see his legacy as mixed or even damaging depending on your historical lens. How to Think About It Historically Both views can be partially valid — here's a neutral framing: Positive Legacy Negative Legacy

Bodies: The Whole Blood-Pumping Story by Glenn Murphy I picked up Bodies: The Whole Blood-Pumping Story by Glenn Murphy on a whim, expecting a light, kid-friendly science read—and while it’s technically written for ages 12 and up, I’m 26 and I honestly learned a ton. I didn’t expect to be so entertained while absorbing facts about blood, organs, digestion, and all the bizarre things our bodies do on a daily basis. What really makes this book stand out is Murphy’s tone: it’s casual, witty, and packed with humor. He has this way of making science feel fun and accessible without ever dumbing things down. You get all the cool facts you wish you’d learned in school—complete with gross-out moments and weird trivia—but in a way that sticks. It feels more like you’re chatting with your smart, funny friend than reading a science book. Even though it’s aimed at younger readers, I think adults (especially those who feel like they’ve forgotten everything they learned in biology class) will find it just as informative and maybe even more fun. It also helped me get out of a bit of a reading slump—sometimes you just need something light, fast-paced, and genuinely enjoyable to remind yourself why you love reading in the first place. If you’re looking for something educational that doesn’t feel like homework, or if you want to spark your curiosity about the human body again, I highly recommend giving this one a try. Age is just a number—especially when you're learning how your actual body works!
