What do we do when things go wrong?
Years ago, when I first spotted this book in a stationery shop, I decided to buy it without even flipping through its pages. On the cover, three men were being carried by the river's current toward an unknown destination. The title revealed little more than the image itself: Three Men in a Boat. Where they were going and why remained hidden between the pages.
For some reason, I never got around to reading it. The book sat forgotten on a shelf for years, quietly waiting for me. Then one day I picked it up and finally began. Soon, I discovered why these three men had embarked on such a sudden and peculiar boating trip. Tired of their daily routines and convinced that they were suffering from all sorts of illnesses, they believe an adventure will do them good. Instead, the following two weeks prove far more challenging than expected. They can never quite agree on what should be done or how it should be done. They blame one another, make a mess of simple tasks, and seem incapable of catching a break. Jerome narrates all of this with an exaggerated sense of humor and remarkable wit.
In the end, the three companions more or less accomplish what they set out to do. By the time they return to dry land, they are rather proud of themselves. But perhaps this book was written not only to amuse, but also to make us reflect. As we accompany these three friends like an invisible fourth passenger, we spend much of the journey wanting to step in and sort things out for them.
And yet, when things go wrong in our own lives, what exactly do we do?
Sanırım hayatımda bu kadar detaylı yazılmış bir İngilizce kitap okuduğumu söyleyemem. Bir noktadan sonra bu kitabın iyi çevrilmiş bir Türkçe versiyonunu okumayı gerçekten çok isterdim, ama sanırım böyle bir çevirisi yok — ya da en azından ben denk gelmedim. Bu kitabı okurken bir an bile küçük bir detayı kaçırırsanız, ne okuduğunuzu unutabiliyorsunuz. Çünkü hiçbir şey göründüğü gibi değil. Her şey düşüncelerden ibaret ve düşünceler her şey olabilir, değil mi? Mutlu bir şarkı sizi iyileştirebilir ya da hüzünlü bir şarkı kırık parçalarınızı onarmanıza yardımcı olabilir.
Okurken hikâyenin nereye varacağını çok merak ettim ve tahmin ettiğim gibi hiç olmadı. Hatta sonu beni gerçekten şaşırttı. Kafamın karıştığı çok fazla yer oldu. Ana diliniz dışında bir dilde kitap okumanın zorluklarından biri de bu sanırım. Ama Raya ve Q’yu karakter olarak gerçekten çok sevdim. Hâlâ sonundan emin değilim. Gerçek miydi, hayal miydi? Mutlu oldular mı? Birbirlerine kavuştular mı? Bence yazar bana bir açıklama borçlu.
İlk başta treni çok sevmiştim ama trenin sırları ortaya çıktıkça, Raya gibi ben de aslında böyle bir trende olmak istemediğimi fark ettim. Ama eğer bir gün denk gelirseniz, bence okuyun. Çünkü sizi oldukça ilginç bir yolculuk bekliyor olacak.

I don’t think I’ve ever read an English book written with this much detail before. At some point, I really wished I could read a well-translated Turkish version of this book, but I don’t think one exists — or at least I’ve never come across it. While reading, if you miss even the smallest detail for a moment, you suddenly forget what exactly you’re reading. Because nothing is what you think it is. I honestly don’t even know where to start. I wanted to read this book because the title and the concept caught my attention, but I can say it wasn’t exactly what I imagined. Did I like it? Did I enjoy reading it? Was I curious about what would happen next? Yes. In fact, since I had already read some of the books mentioned in the list, it was easy to understand the references. It was also written in good English — in my opinion, around a B1-B2 level — understandable for intermediate readers, with an interesting concept.
Unfortunately, since the characters were of Indian background, there were some words and expressions I didn’t fully understand. I wish there had been explanations for them somewhere. They also talked about foods a lot, but I didn’t even know what most of them were.
Then there was the thing Aidan did… I understand that sometimes not everything needs to be explained, but I still wanted more hints about it. I liked the idea of the story progressing through different books, but when we finally got to the books that gave the chapters their titles, I didn’t really like that the character was reading completely different books instead.
The ending wasn’t bad, but it could have been better. I really liked Mukesh’s storyline and the friendships he made, but I can’t say I connected much with the main character, Leila. If you come across this book, I think it’s worth giving it a chance.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum tells the story of Dorothy, a young girl who lives in Kansas and is suddenly carried away by a cyclone to the magical land of Oz. After her house accidentally kills the Wicked Witch of the East, Dorothy learns she must travel to the Emerald City to ask the Wizard of Oz for help returning home. Along the way, she meets the Scarecrow, who believes he lacks a brain; the Tin Woodman, who longs for a heart; and the Cowardly Lion, who wishes for courage. The group travels together, facing various challenges before finally reaching the Wizard. He promises to help them only if they defeat the Wicked Witch of the West, which Dorothy ultimately does. However, when they return, the Wizard is revealed to be an ordinary man using illusions. Despite this, he gives Dorothy’s companions tokens that help them recognize they already possess the qualities they desired. In the end, Dorothy learns she can return home using the magical power of her silver shoes, realizing that her greatest wish has been within her reach all along.
From a literary perspective, the novel explores themes of self-discovery, identity, and the importance of inner qualities over external appearances. Each of Dorothy’s companions symbolizes a human trait "intelligence, compassion, and courage" and their journeys reveal that these qualities are not granted by others but already exist within them. This idea reflects a central message of the novel: people often underestimate themselves and seek validation from external sources instead of trusting their own abilities. The story also examines the contrast between illusion and reality, particularly through the character of the Wizard, who appears powerful but is ultimately just an ordinary man. This suggests a subtle criticism
Honestly, I’m not sure if I liked this book or not. Somehow, it kept me reading. I was curious about what would happen, how the events would connect, and how it would end until the very last page. I didn’t understand everything completely, but I understood the story in general.
It wasn’t really trying to be a serious book anyway. Since it’s the author’s first book, I guess that’s normal… I don’t know, the author also seems a bit unusual. It was a very different kind of book, but every character had a purpose.
Was I surprised at some parts? Yes. There were moments when something unexpected happened, or when I finally understood why something from a few pages before happened.
The ending was nice, honestly. It was a bit tiring to read. Was it the best book? No. I don’t know… I feel like I got what I wanted, but maybe I could have gotten more.
Açıkçası bu kitabı sevdim mi sevmedim mi emin olamıyorum. Kendini bir şekilde bana okutturdu, yani ne olacağını, olayların nasıl bağlanacağını ve sonunda nasıl biteceğini sonuna kadar merak ettim açıkçası. Her şeyi tam olarak anladım sayılmaz ama genel olarak hikayeyi anladım. Zaten ciddi olmaya çalışan bir kitap değildi. Yazarın da ilk kitabı olduğu için normal galiba, bilmiyorum yazarın kendisi de normal değil gibi... Içerisinde çok farklı ama herkesin bir amacı olan bir kitaptı. Şaşırdığım yerler oldu mu? Evet. Bazı sayfalara gelince böyle beklemediğim ya da birkaç sayfa önceki olayın neden olduğunu anladığım yerlerde oldu. Güzel bitti açıkçası. Bir tık beni yordu. En iyi kitap mıydı? Değildi. Bilmiyorum, sanki istediğim şeyi aldım ama daha fazlasını da alabilirdik gibi.
The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway tells a story that feels simple at first, almost like something you could explain in a few sentences. An old fisherman goes out to sea, catches a great fish, and loses it on the way back. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that this is not really a story about fishing at all. It is about endurance, dignity, and what it means to struggle in a world that does not always reward effort.
The novella centers on Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman who has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish. In his village, he is seen as unlucky, even defeated. Only a young boy, Manolin, continues to believe in him, although he is no longer allowed to fish with Santiago. This quiet isolation shapes the emotional atmosphere of the story. Santiago is not just physically alone at sea; he is also set apart from the people around him, living on the edge of relevance.
When he finally sets out far into the Gulf Stream, determined to break his unlucky streak, he hooks a giant marlin. What follows is a long, exhausting struggle that lasts for days. The fish pulls his small boat deep into the open sea, and Santiago, despite his age and pain, refuses to give up. What is striking here is not just the physical challenge, but the way Santiago thinks about the fish. He does not hate it. He respects it, admires it, even feels a kind of kinship with it. At times, he speaks to it as if it were an equal. This changes the nature of the conflict. It is not a simple battle between man and nature, but something more complex, almost like a test of worth between two noble beings.
When Santiago finally kills the marlin, it feels like a moment of triumph, but that triumph does not last. Sharks are drawn to the blood of the fish and begin to attack it.
