“Yatan Ölüm” (After the Funeral) benim için Agatha Christie’nin en sinsice kurgulanmış işlerinden biriydi. O klasik “aile toplanır, geçmiş açılır, sırlar dökülür” temasını alıp öyle bir işliyor ki, okurken sürekli bir şeylerin ters olduğunu hissediyorsun ama tam olarak neyi yakalayamıyorsun.
Hikâye bir cenaze sonrası yapılan o rahatsız edici konuşmayla başlıyor ve bence kitabın en güçlü yanı da bu: tek bir cümleyle tüm dengeler altüst oluyor. O andan itibaren herkes birbirinden şüpheli hale geliyor. Aile içindeki ilişkiler, kırgınlıklar, bastırılmış öfke… Hepsi yavaş yavaş yüzeye çıkıyor. Christie’nin karakter yazımına bir kez daha hayran kaldım; kimse boş değil, herkesin bir derdi ve sakladığı bir şey var.
Poirot’nun olaya dahil olmasıyla birlikte o klasik sakin ama zekice ilerleyen çözüm sürecini izlemek çok keyifliydi. Gösterişsiz ama nokta atışı tespitleriyle yine herkesi geride bırakıyor. Ama itiraf etmem gerekirse bu kitapta olaydan çok insanların psikolojisi daha fazla ilgimi çekti.
Tek eleştirim, bazı bölümlerde tempoyu biraz fazla düşürmesi oldu. Özellikle ortalarda aynı noktada dolanıyormuş gibi hissettirdiği anlar vardı. Ama final… gerçekten Christie’ye yakışır şekilde zekiceydi. Geriye dönüp düşününce “aslında ipuçları hep oradaymış” dedirtiyor.
Genel olarak, büyük aksiyonlar bekleyenler için değil ama ince ince işlenen bir gizem, karakter odaklı bir polisiye isteyenler için çok tatmin edici bir kitap. Benim için sürükleyici ve akıllıca kurgulanmış bir Christie romanıydı.

Fistly,I want to express some doubts about the reliability of the narrator, Nick Carraway, who tells the life of the main character, Jay Gatsby, from his own perspective because Nick sometimes praises Gatsby and sometimes expresses critical thoughts about him. This situation shows that the narrator is not completely objective and tells the story according to his own feelings.
Secondly, we see the American Dream theme from the beginning to the end of the story. The American Dream is the belief that no matter which social class people come from, they can become rich and successful through hard work. This thought is Jay Gatsby’s main motivation. His obsessive love for Daisy Buchanan and his hope that she will return to him one day lead him to work harder and do everything he can to become rich. The novel conveys this hope through the symbol of the green light. The green light comes from Daisy’s house, and when Gatsby looks at it, he sees his dreams and hopes. So the green light shows Gatsby’s dreams and the future he wants, and it also shows how unreachable the American Dream can be.
In addition, Jay Gatsby organizes big and flashy parties to prove his wealth and to show it to Daisy Buchanan. However, this situation did not affect either Daisy or the other people. Because society was divided into two parts: “new money” (people who became rich later) and “old money” (people who inherited their wealth). Although Gatsby became rich through his own efforts, he was not appreciated and was even despised by society. Therefore, Daisy did not choose to be with him. This situation shows that for Daisy, social status and wealth were more important than love.

The novel follows Jay Gatsby, a wealthy man who throws lavish parties in hopes that his former lover, Daisy Buchanan, will come. Daisy had once loved Gatsby, but after losing contact with him during the war, she married Tom Buchanan. After five years, Gatsby reconnects with Daisy when Nick Carraway, their mutual friend and neighbor, invites her to tea at Gatsby’s request. Gatsby and Daisy resume their romance, though Daisy is unwilling to leave Tom completely. At the Plaza Hotel in New York, Tom and Gatsby argue bitterly, with Gatsby demanding that Daisy declare she never loved Tom. Daisy hesitates, and the confrontation ends in tension. On the drive back, Daisy—driving Gatsby’s car—accidentally strikes and kills Myrtle Wilson. Gatsby decides to take the blame. Shortly after, George Wilson, convinced Gatsby was responsible, shoots Gatsby while he is floating in his pool, and then kills himself. ·Written in 1886 by Tolstoy, the novella begins at the funeral of Ivan Ilyich. His wife is trying to find out if she is entitled to even more money, and his co-workers are already relishing in their promotional opportunities now that his spot is open. The book covers the backstory of Ivan’s life: his marriage and professional life and his relationship with his children. It covers Ivan’s illness and his thoughts on his life.
This book was particularly interesting for me, because I was dying this last year and reflected on my life. After two heart surgeries, I am doing much better. However, it was interesting to compare notes with Ilyich. For me, the only portion of my life that I deeply regretted was working for jerks. Please note that my current employer is not a jerk. Giving years of my life to a place that didn’t value me was not where I should have spent years of my life.
Ivan Ilyich has the realization that many of the things that he experienced in life were not unique to him even though he thought that he was so unique at the time. He spends most of his time not investing in relationship. He spends time reading books that other people talk about. Why doesn’t he read books that he wants to read? There were deaths of other people mentioned in the book, but Ivan is completely flat, emotionless, when he mentions these deaths. Yet when contemplating his own death, he considers himself unique, special.
