Rand insists that the world is real and natural. There are solid things around us, which—quite automatically—we are aware of. And we are also aware that these things exist, and continue to exist, whether we are around or not. They do not just disappear when we shut our eyes. In other words, existence itself is something real—or, as Rand puts it, “existence exists.” Our world, she concludes, is not a dream, nor something magical, nor illogical, nor arbitrary. Things exist, and have settled relationships to each other, without contradictions: we are surrounded both by solid things, and solid facts.
