Literary Review – Записки сумасшедшего (Diary of a Madman) Gogol’s Diary of a Madman is one of the most psychologically rich and unsettling works in Russian literature. Written in the form of diary entries, it immerses the reader directly into the mind of its protagonist Aksenty Ivanovich Poprishchin, a low-level civil servant whose inner world gradually becomes detached from reality. This is not just a story about madness; it is an exploration of loneliness, social hierarchy, humiliation, and the fragile boundary between hope and delusion. Gogol masterfully shifts the narrative tone: what begins as light satire slowly darkens, turning into a deeply emotional and tragic psychological portrait. Stylistically, the novella demonstrates Gogol’s brilliance in blending absurd humor with piercing social commentary. His language is vivid, his observations precise, and the emotional progression of the protagonist feels disturbingly real. The work remains influential today because it captures universal feelings: wanting to belong, yearning for recognition, being crushed by a rigid society, and escaping into fantasy when reality becomes unbearable. Summary Without Spoilers The story is written as a series of diary entries by Poprishchin, a minor government official who feels insignificant and overlooked in the bureaucratic world of St. Petersburg. At first, he records ordinary frustrations: his tedious job, his longing for the attention of a woman above his social rank, and his resentment toward higher-ranking officials. As time passes, these frustrations deepen. Poprishchin begins to notice strange things and interprets events in unusual ways. He becomes convinced that signs around him carry special meaning. His diary entries grow increasingly fragmented, emotional, and

I continue to think that Uğultulu Tepeler is one of the great books that I have read many details in both Dutch and Turkish. For this reason, it is firmly fixed to my top 10 among my favorite books. Uğultulu Tepeler, this classic book over 170 years old, essentially tells a love story that destroys two families. It is a classic literary story that is written very strongly and deals with very intense, deep emotions. The theme is attractive. The course of a love that leaves deep wounds is perhaps the most important. The field of vision and imagination, the heated discovery of a deadly but rebuilding love relationship, the brilliant manipulation of time and space, places this beautiful English classic in its category. A powerful epic written on love, hate, jealousy, revenge, hypocrisy, contempt, pride, sadness, fear, anger, cowardice, flattery, purity, insididiousness, blindness, vivid, mysterious, witty, infidelity and finally, love again. Extremely impressive! Therefore, it is sad that this is Bronté's only book that has survived. A deep, sad story that continues after the last page. I definitely recommend you to read this fascinating, persuasive, shocking masterpiece. Undoubtedly 5 stars for Emily Bronté's Ugultulu Hills.

A debut novel about an accomplished woman who slowly loses her thoughts and memories to early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Genova's work with Alzheimer's patients has given her a deep understanding of the disorder and its impact not only on the afflicted, but on their friends and family as well. She does a remarkable job of sharing that perspective with her readers. Most of us have a sketchy familiarity with Alzheimer's and its primary symptom: a gradual loss of memory. Genova moves her readers beyond their superficial knowledge to a more profound grasp of the illness, illuminating consequences of it that most haven't considered (for example, the eventual loss of the ability to read a novel, as Alzheimer's patients lose the capacity to keep track of a plot line). The novel follows Alice Howland's life from her first suspicions of the illness through its conclusive diagnoses to how Alice and her family learn to cope as her condition worsens. Although the story's progression is somewhat predictable, the scenes Genova relates are generally unexpected. Like Alice, the reader never knows when the disease will impact a situation or simply lie dormant in the background. When Alice does exhibit symptoms, they seem to come when she, and the reader, least expect them. Genova also explores the difficult decisions faced by Alzheimer's patients and their families. She delves into such subjects as treatment options, care facilities, coping mechanisms, genetic implications, and even suicide. The text occasionally gets a bit wordy and artificial during some of these discussions, but for the most part they add to the sense of realism the novel projects. The book does lack a certain emotional depth. The narrator reports Alice's actions, but doesn't explore her feelings to any great

This relatively short book is about an exceptional man with an extraordinary memory capacity. The author introduced him as "a Jewish boy who, having failed as a musician and as a journalist, had become a mnemonist". Whilst the focus of the book is the subject’s "vast memory", what the author eventually depicts is a man whose total personality is truly unique and complex. What emerges is a picture of a strange man with very great expectations but unfulfilled ambitions, whose inexhaustible memory capacity is matched only by his enigmatic nature. Quite fascinating is the author’s forensic and painstaking unraveling of the underlying mechanism behind this man’s phenomenal memory and unusual character (page 4). The book’s comprehensive approach was guided by the author’s precept that ‘the thoughtful physician is never interested merely in the course of a disease he happens to be studying at the moment, but tries to determine what effect a disturbance has on other organic processes…thus giving rise to the total picture of disease (pages 4-5). He exemplified this precept throughout the book, urging others to follow his example and study other psychological syndromes such as this (page 5). The author, a psychologist and neurologist, studied the protagonist, now known as Solomon Shereshevsky, for almost thirty years, starting in the 1920’s. His approach was methodical, typified by a keen attention to detail, and carried out over a long period of time. What he unearthed was a rare and exceptional man whose memory he described as ‘one of the keenest the literature on the subject has ever described’ (page 3). It didn’t take much testing for the author to realise that "it was impossible to establish a point of limit to the capacity or the duration of his memory" because he had the

if you've made it this far, darren’s story is no longer just about survival — it's a matter of destiny. *lord of the shadows* is one of the darkest, most intense books in the series. it's not just the atmosphere that's heavy; darren's inner world is growing darker too. in this book, he’s forced to confront some hard truths: who he is, what he's becoming, what he can and can't prevent. these questions weigh heavier with every page. we're back in the city, but this time the streets have never felt so threatening. the vampaneze are no longer hiding in the shadows — they're close enough to feel their breath. darren steps right into the heart of this danger, along with harkat. but the real storm isn’t just outside — it’s brewing within. harkat plays a crucial role again. his presence, the clues to his past, and his bond with darren become much more defined in this book. and of course, there's steve. the moment he enters the stage, everything changes. every line he speaks carries a threat, every move he makes is a ghost from the past. his presence isn’t just about being an enemy — it forces darren to confront himself. perhaps the most striking part of the book is that there's no place left to run. there are choices, but none are easy. darren doesn’t just step into the role of a hero — he’s scared, angry, uncertain. and yet, he keeps going. that’s what makes him strong. the pacing is once again masterfully done. the tension builds gradually, but then it spikes so suddenly that it becomes hard to breathe. and the ending… is utterly devastating. maybe not physically, but emotionally, it hits like a hammer. lord of the shadows feels like a farewell to childhood. the fairytale ends, and only the truths remain. but that’s what makes it so powerful, so moving. be prepared —

if you've made it this far into the darren shan series, you already know—each book has been its own kind of trial. but the lake of souls? this time, we're facing a completely different kind of test. it’s not just about physical survival anymore; this one dives deep into identity, loyalty, and fate. in this book, darren and harkat embark on a journey into a strange, hauntingly dark realm. their goal? to uncover who harkat truly is. but the path is anything but easy. the atmosphere is so intense that at times, it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s a nightmare. monsters, twisted creatures, trials that seem to defy logic… everything slowly pushes darren to confront both harkat and himself. to me, this book has the most unique tone in the series. yes, there’s action, and the tension never really lets up—but the most dominant feelings are loneliness and uncertainty. darren isn’t just fighting anymore; he’s questioning. “who am i?” “who is harkat?” “what awaits us in the future?” these questions linger in the air the entire time. this journey transforms darren from a mere fighter into something more: someone who sees the bigger picture, who questions deeper, who feels more. and that major revelation near the end… the truth about harkat’s past… it wasn’t what i expected at all. it hit much harder—emotionally and narratively, it was incredibly powerful. the writing is, as always, simple and clear—but this time the atmosphere is much heavier. you can’t just move on to the next page right away; there’s something you need to sit with first. honestly, this was one of the most emotionally draining books in the series for me—but i'm glad i read it. if, like me, you care not just about the battles, but also about the characters’ inner journeys, the Lake of souls will both
