John Boyne 1971'de İrlanda'da doğdu. Edebiyata öyküyle başladı. İki kez İrlanda Kitap Ödülü'nü kazanan, New York Times'ın bestseller listesinde zirveye çıkan, dünyada 5 milyondan fazla satan ve 2008'de filme alınan Çizgili Pijamalı Çocuk (2006) ile birlikte onsekizden fazla romanı var. Boyne, bugün hala yaşadığı Dublin'de doğdu. İlk kısa öyküsü Sunday Tribune tarafından yayınlandı ve 1993'te Hennessy Edebiyat Ödülü için kısa listeye alındı. Trinity College Dublin (BA) ve University of East Anglia (MA) mezunu, 2015 yılında East Anglia Üniversitesi'nden Fahri Edebiyat Doktorası ile ödüllendirildi. 2015 Scotiabank Giller Ödülü'nün jüri başkanlığını yaptı.
